Expected I hat Only a Few
of the Present Incum
bents will be Opposed.
Strange to say, there seems to be
an apathy in the matter of contests
before the coming mayor and coun
cil tor places within the gift of that
body in the city for the year 1904.
Asa matter of fact only one or two
contests will occur and they will he
for minor places.
The News has it that no one will
ooiiose City -Clerk Russell. Chelf of
Police Burney, Assistant Cheif Ow
ens, and Chief Green of the fire de
partment, and others in official places.
City Treasurer Geo. H. Smith has
resigned and a number of prominent
Brunswickians have been mentioned
in connection with the position, but
it is more than likely that there will
not be more than one applicant for
the place.
This is taken toi be a pretty good in
dication when there are not a half doz
en or more applicants for all the offices
in the city.
The new hoard will be sworn in on
the first Monday in January and it i3
very likely that the election of offi
cers will occur at the next regular
meeting of council.
Four of the present members of
council are, of course, to retire, and
this will leave some very important
committee appointments with Mayor
Grovatt.
