2 AN ATTACK OF PROVINCIALISM Brunswick’s Latest One Will Attract Some Attention WHAT A READDR HAS TO SAY "A Resident Troubled with Ennui" Writes interesting of the Car nival and Street Fair Question. Editor of The News, Dear Sir: —Brunswick's latest attack of provincialism Is more than apt to make us appear redlculous in the eye,: of the outside world, and the fact that It was caused by so ordinary a thing I as a company desiring to give series of entertainments under tents, wilt not make it look any more reasonable to outsiders. , Comparisons always make one of the compared to appear to, disadvan tage, and when it Is known that near ly every town in this and adjoining states has for the last month or more been having some sort of enter tatnment partaking of a more or less public character, It shows us up In rather a poor light. Are we so poor financially, as to make it appear Im possible for us to he able to, take In an amusement as reasonable In price as the street shows charge? One of the reasons offered against tEo affair was on moral grounds; an tyther because It would take a sum of money from the city with no adequate returns; another because people who had not paid their bill 3 or llieir house rent would be likely to spend money for a ticket. Isn’t this about the lim it of a paternal local government? it would seem about as reasonable to have the number of people who went to visit the fairs of Savannah, Macon and Jacksonville, hauled up before the august body for having gone. The truth of the mattter is this, we are beconnmiug so narrow minded as a city that we are ruining many good opportunities for attractng the de sirable class of people to settle here; when It has been a question of our high ones in authority giving dollars t fake concerns to junket around on! we, the people, have had no say either yea nor nay. and when it comes to a question of individual amusement, for •which ench individual will pay, It is shout as small a prlvlege as we can ask to, think for ourselves. Besides all this, these people have to live, and money they are pay ing out for hoard, rooms, laundry work and necessities of the sort, coupled with the license they are oblig ed to pay will, it seems to me, be pretty good interest; and a little amusement wont hurt the unfortunate cues who were not able to leave this delightful health resort for amuse ment elsewhere; and have the august body never objected to the minstrels? with scarcely an exception, these pop ular people don’t spend a cent In town as they travel In their own car, carry about all they repuire with them and rarely play to empty benches. If we are ever to get out of the rut of provincialism into which we are stuck this is a pretty good time to be gin. We will hardly be able to keep as residents, people from other cit'les unless they are suffering from paral ysis or other illnesses. "A Resident Troubled With Ennui." Wine List for the Holidays. N.
