JUDGE SVMMES
DEFENDS CHITS
♦
Well Known Attorney has
Something to Say
of Cases
WHY 1 HEY TAKE IP TIME
Say* People Should not Criticise the
and Courts Because Con
siderable Time is Taken to
Dispose of Cases.
Editor Brunswick News,
Dear Sir:—l noticed in your paper
a morning or two ago that very lit
tle business was being done at. this
session of the court, and I noticed in
your issue of tills morning that the
case of Sherman Jones against the
Brunswck & Birmingham Railroad Cot,
in which you chronicled that I was
■anv'ong the lawyers engaged in it,
had been the longest ever tried in
this county. I am sure that you
would not do the Judge nor the bar
nn injustice knowingly, and as your
references mentioned might do one
or the other or both, I hope you will
give me space in your valuable journal
to say that there has been as much
business done at this session of the
superior court as has been done at
any session of the same length within
my memory and I have been a prac
titioner in the court nearly thirty
years.
I want to say further that within
my experience not one, hut numbers
and numbers of civil cases have con
sumed more time in the trial than did
the case above mentioned. Bet me
say further that while this ease con
sumed nearly two days, it was real
ly disposed of In a very brief time.
There were a great, number of witness
es in the case, and a number of warm
ly contested, important issued, and
it was with remarkable dispatch that
the case was tried within the time It
was.
I want to say further that I have
noticed a growing tendency, both up
on the part of the people and the
press, to demand short and hasty In
vestigations and trials. This Is a
great mistake. Cases must be
tried when they are carried into the
courts; cases will be carried to the
courts so long as there arc dlMree-.

them with understanding. It takes
lots of time to do this; it takes lot
of time to patiently, fully and honest
ly hear any case—hear what each
party has to say; hear what bis wit
nesses have to say; and there can he
no correct result reached until there
has been a full hearing, if more time
was consumed in patient investigation
instead of the rapid, sixtv-milo-an-hour
gait that seems to be demanded 01
the courts, there would he fewer ap
peals to the supreme court.
A court should hot he criticized be
cause it listens with patience—the
only way to decide with understanding
is to listen with patience. A court
should he commended that it patiently
listens and diligentliy enquires.
