Steps will be taken at once by the U. S. engineers to offset the force of the ocean at Cumberland Inland, near Fernandina harbor. The sea is cut ting into the island so far that there is danger of its making a wide beach opposite St. Mary’s river, thus mak ing an entrance to Fernandina north of the present one. There is also danger of its flanking the present jetties. Col, Quinn the chief engineer for this division has been notified of the encroach ment of the sea, asd will take steps at once to offset it. The phrase in such instances, howev er, has no significance as applying to the bait employed to allure the fish, but is merely an elastic term of du bious meaning and suspicious origin, utilized, as I have already intimated, simply because of the sanction which It haß gained by customary usage in fairy tales generally.
