Brunswick needs small Industries,
and It looks ns if wo will get one or
two during the next few months.
The board of trade committee has
already commenced work after an
appropriation for a 30-foot channel
of the Brunswick bar.
Patrick Collin,a was re-elected may
or of Boston by the largest mojority
ever rolled up by the democrats in
that city.
Read tli© ads. of the merchants in
the News, and you will have but lit
tle difficulty in Sliding a suitable
Christmas present for any one.
The civic league has decided to con
tinue the good work commenced in
Brunswick last fall in beautifying the
different, squares in the city. They
shovld have the co-operation of the
people generally.
Why is it that, in every clime, men
are found who are honest in every
othe- rospect when they get a chance

Knoxville Sentinel.
"Why,” asks the SL Bouis Globe-
Uemocrat, "should ithe government
distribute free seeds any more than it
should distribute free pocket knives?
Yea, verily!, says the Tampa Times,
ob any more than it should distrib
ute tariff subsides?
The Chicago Tribune speaks deli
cately of the 'similarity'' between pas
sages of Roosevelt’s messages and Joe
Folke’s speeches. There is the same
"similarity” between them that exists
between the lost overcoat and the
back of the man who swiped it.
ROOSEVELT AND HEATH. j
Perry S. Heath, who is as hard as
truth to crush, reiterates bis declara
tion that he has no idea of surrender
ing the secretaryship of the republican
national committee. He will, of course
have the hearty support of Senator
Hanna and also of all the "grafters”
is the party. This last faction, as
the postal revelations prove, embrace
among the principals and their friends
in congress and out, a very consider
able body.
Most people will regard the con
tent over Heath as a struggle betwten
Roosevelt and the baser elements in
his party. If Heath stays the aver
age man will conclude that the spoils-]
men have got the upperd hand. Of
| course, the president may say that the ■
j question of dealing with Heath he i
I longs to the national committee, and
not to him; hut here Is a case where
|
Interference would ho abundantly jus--
trfled.
The president is the head of the
party, ho Is the prospective candi
date for president, and he would he
well within his political rights here
to insist that Heath stand not upon
the order cf hie going, but go at once.
Mr. Roosevelt can point out that if
Heath Is allowed 1o strut much longer
among the leaders It will ho useless
for any republican to run. Charles IT
once grumbled because every one of
his friends kept a "tame knave” and
President Roosevelt has more than
once had reason to echo this com
plaint. For his own salvation, how
ever. he must see to It that his parti
cular tame knave of Senator Hanna’s
Is sent packing.
New York Is going to make a hard
fight to secure the democratic con
vention. ,
Gov. Odel nf Npiv York poems to
have put Senator Platt out of business
effectively as a boss. But be can nev
er end Platt’s power for mlscWof mak
ing asd he will sit uneasy on Ids
tbrono as long as the old man Is bur
rowing about the political field.
William K. Vanderbilt. Jr., is to be
come a clerk to tbe office of the first
vice presides! of tbe New York Cen
tral road. Ills desk will be near that,
of bis father and near that of Alfred
Gwynne Vanderbilt, to what Is called
“the millionaire's division" of the office
iu New York.
Over in Madrid it Is said that the
states of South America are eager to
form an alliance of some kind with
Spain in order to resist aggression
from the United States. It is believed,
though, that in view of recent experi
ence Spain will not be disposed to
push itself into the breach with any
unnecessary rudeness.
“LILY WHITES" DISINTEGRATING.
We learn from a Washington spec
ial iu the Louisville Courier-Journal
that .reports are being received at the
national suatal from New Orleans to
the effect that the "Lily While' party
in tho state of Louisiana has lust so
many of its members that if is now
little more than a skeleton organiza
tion., The same disintegration in
stales where the movement once prom-
said to be manifesting itself in dther
ised to become so strong. Southern
members of congress say that the al
titude of the president on the negno
question has placed the Inly While
in a position where he has either to
join the sc. failed regular organization
supporting the president or the demo
cratic party, in a greater majority
of the eases the "Lily White" is no-.,
with the democratic party. The Lou
isiana democrats will hold a primary
on January It) to nominate a govern
or and United States senator. All
white democrats are invited to vote
in this primary. Louisiana politi
cians state that a surprisingly large
number of Lily Whiles hare announc
ed their intentions of affiliating with
the democrats and taking part iu tho
primary.
The "Lily Whites" were never very
numerous in Georgia and there are
fewer now than when McKinley was
president, llis policy brought them
into existence, hut with the advent of
Rooseveit, with his negro loving pro
pensities, as manifested in social re
lations, the number of the Lily Whites
has rapidly decreased.
