Citizens Petition Council
But it Will Continue
Today
The stret fair people were in danger
of more trouble yesterday, and the
city council held a .special meeting
about 12 o'clock to act on a petition
elsred by a number of people resid
ing near Maynolia nark, askinc the
body to order the fair .stopped claim
ing that it made too much noise.
Rev. C. P. Thornton was present
and acted as spokesman for the citi
zens who signed the petition. The
matter was dismissed for some time
and it was decided not to Interfere
with the carnival, and to let In con
tinue through today.
This little affair of amusement,
which has encountered so much trou
ble and caused so much talk inthe city
will come to a close tonight, and it
might be said that the managers will
find themselves behind a couple of
hundred dollars. While the
fair has been pretty well patronized
since Its opened, the owners lost
money here during the first part of
the week, when they were awaiting
the action of council to begin busi
ness.
However, Manager Berger and his
employes will leave the city tomorow
and it is not probable that they win
again soon put their feet on Brunswick
soil.

That shorthand was used In the an

be worth knowing that there is In the
Armenian "Acts of St. Calllstratus”
a reference to the employment of sto

cluded In Mr. F. C. Cony beam's “Ar
menian Apology and Acta of Apollo

Christianity.” The account of Cal
llstrutus was probably written In tha
first half of the fourth century. It In
cludes several long addresses of CalU

faith for which he and forty nine of
hls comrades became martyrs. X'er
bnps with a view to giving them au

“But there was a certain scribe of
the law court who was near to tlio

of Calltstratua, and he wrote it down

perhaps even a degree of Irrosolulenoss

Alollcy, writing to his wife iu 1858,
said: “I believe you have mwer seen
Thackeray, lie ha., the appearance of
a colossal infant—smooth, white, shin

perpetual wonder how lie keeps his

Catching: Rook Titles.
Most readers would be at a loss to
discover the source of some book titles
and would forget If they ever knew
that “The World Well Lost” is bor
rowed from Dryden, that “A Dream
utul a Forgetting” Is Wordsworth’s
phrase and that it was Othello who
loved “Not Wisely, but Too Well.” Wo
might add that iu spite of the famili
arity of the famous “Elegy” not one
reader in ten will trace Air. Hardy’s
“Far From the Madding Crowd’’ to
Gray or will connect “One of Three"
with the mariner who held the wed
ding guest with his glittering eye. Mr.
Hardy’s titles, like Howells', are al
most Invariably attractive. 'A Pair of
Blue Eyes,” "Two on a Tower” and
“The Return of the Native” stimulate
curiosity.
Often a proverb or any other famil
iar phrase is as good as a recognized
quotatiou. "Put Yourself Iu His Place”
and “It Is Never Too Late to Mend”
were strokes of genius on the part of
Charles lteade, and "Second Thoughts,”
“Dead Men’s Shoes” and "The Root of
All Evil” are hardly less inviting.—

Little Emerson—Mamma, I find do
marginal note in elucidation of this
expression, which I observe frequently
to occur in my volume of "Fairy Tale
Classtcs”—"with tinted breath.” What
ts the proper Interpretation of the
phrase?
Mamma—“With, tinted breath," my
,aon, commonly occurs In ffliry tales.
jXoul father often returns from pisca
torial excursions with bated hrenth.
The phrase in such instances, howev
er, has no significance as applying to
the halt employed to allure the fish,
but is merely an elastic term of du
bious meaning and suspicions origin,
utilized, as 1 have already intimated,
simply because of the sanction which
it has gained by customary usage in
fairy tales generally. Do you compre
