Wby tho caruival aliould not coiiio to Brunswick would malm a good sub ject teal some ot tko aldermen to write upi>- Atlanta is to bo congratulated that giro Is to bo headquarters fur the de partment ot the gulf in future. At lanta 1b gioat, anyway, when you come lu think of it. —*• WE SHOULD HAVE IT, We desire to congratulate the mem bers ot tire board of education lor the manner in which they at all times have pushed educational matters In this county. At their meeting held Thurs day they appointed a committeu to ask Andrew Carnegie to erect one ot his libraries in this city. This is a move in the right diiect ion, and it is to he hoptd that Mr. Carnegie will consent to make an ap propriation lor Brunswick on the li brary lino. A free library is one of the best educational factors in thu >ud; 11 places tbo humblest people in the community within the reach of learn ing. It dow not respect persons, and offers to one and all the priviliges of acquiring knowledge. \Ve have often thought of tin Car nogie idea and from time to time pave wondered why It was that the board of education or others in au thority * th ° ald ° £ Nr . Carnegie In the matter. We hope that the committee ap pointed to take the matter up with the Pittsburg millionaire will do so, at once and the people of this city should make every reasonable conces sion in order that we might land one of these libraries bore in Brunswick It is a groat proposition and one that should call for tho best thought on tii* of our p©opl# THE ACT OF A ROBBER. From the debate Jn the senate, Citizen, the Jacksonville Times-Union Citizen, it looks as if there is trouble ahead for President Roosevelt and the so-called republic of Panama. In spite of party affiliation Senator Hoar terms the course of the administration in the strongest terms. True, he pro posed only an inquiry, but the nature of his remarks showed that he consid ered the United States a robber so far as the Panama revolution was con cerned. The democratic caucus will decide the attitude the party will pursue. It is stated that hereafter the demo crats will stand together, abiding by the decisions of the caucus. If the democrats should unanimously oppose the treaty with Panama they would defeat it, for it could not get the -necessary majority without the dem ocratic votes. Asa matter fo principle this is just exactly what they should do. Wheth er they will or not it is Impossible to say. Opportunism would advise the ratification of the treaty. The dem ocratic party would lose by opposing It. A fight for principle is not always successful if self-interest is on the other side. The American people want the canal, and see In the ratification of ibis treaty the quickest means of securing it. It ought to he true that the majority would stick io principle hut that does not prove that it is true. The eon quest of the Philippines was Indorsed when McKinley was elected a second time, though this en doresoment wan inconsistent, with the principles on which ibis government was founded. Tho American people are as intelligent as any on earth, hut they have a vast number of jin goes among them. From the partial accounts of the Panama revolution which have hcer given out it Is easy to read between tlio lines and see that It was inspired from Washington. It was an act of unwarrantable aggression, aud no ex can be found to justify it. ROOSEVpT. The National * ] gue, which has been in session m Washington for several days, does not seem to have any very great admi ration for President Bcxwevelt, not withstanding tho latter's great solic itude for the colored brother. A res olution was presented to the session of the league during its session last Tuuiday ub lolluvva; • We indorse the courageous states manship of Theodore Roosevelt and call upon the national republican par ty t u name him as Hie standard bear er tor tho party ot freedom aud hu man liberty in IDU4; and *“< lUo 3UO ‘ uoo colored mea scattered tlnoughuin tbo north, east and west, pledgo to Him our loyul support. When it eaiuo to a voto tbo resulu lion received 33 voles wniio 38 were cast against it, thus causing a defeat tor the so-called reserved faction oi the league, which taction walked out ot tho convention. There is au element of the league W hleh opposes Booker Washington tt uU hit idea that the negro should have suffeieut education and iutolh geueo to entitle him to the privilege or suffrage, and this element opposes the president because o£ his known admiration £or Washington. Just what hearing this opposition will have upon the delegates to ihe uu tional convention remains to be seen Hut the action o£ the suffrage league is not calculated to cause the presi dent to l'clicitato himself upon im proved prospects of receiving the nomination. The president has been making overtures to the negro lor sev eral months past, and this action 1 in a great measure a slap in the lace for his policy. The Panama emissary is having all kinds of trouble locating legation headquarters in Washington, lhe fact of the matter is he has no bus iness there at all. Th hanging of Lee Crtbb at Douglas yesterday was a substanttial endorse ment of the able course of Solieitor- General Hennett who has been very ac tive in l'is prosecution of this thorough ly lawless cittizcu.
