Poor little old Panama. She has no Idea what kiud of trouble she is get ting into . A thirty foot channel is a song we of Urutnswlek should learn by heart and sing it all the time. Bryan is going to havo an audience .witlr the Czar. Nicholas had better get fl.xed for a dissertation on silver. The people of Brunswick should learn the lesson "live and let live” end the sooner they do it the better for them. That serate committee swallowed Leonard Wood after all. A little white wash will do the young man a lot ot good anyway. The Burger carnival people have had all kinds of trouble here in Bruns wick and it Is safe to say that they will not come this way again. We are pleased to note the fact that the present city administration has stated that the work on the streets will bo resumed in January. Uncle Ben Tillman is playiug in hard luck, lie received a counterfeit hundred dollar bill, lost a plantation in South Carolina and made a speech in the senate, aH in one week. The discharge of lire works in the city limits is against thu city ordi nances and Mayor Crovatt asks the News to remind the people of the fact, ft is a dangerous piece of work and jt is to he hoped that it will be done away w ith. .^ At the meutins of tho Men's club to be held Tuesday evening Col. C. P. .Goodyear is to deliver as address on tlie subjnet of "lAw and Lawyers. The public is invited to attend and hear this very able discourse. Col. Goodyear has been at the bar for more than a quarter of a century and is an *lu<iUnt‘and logical orator. PARKER FOR PRESIDENT. ! The democratic campaign for the presidency must he an aggressive one for the party to have any chance of success. To make an aggressive cam paign the party must select as its can didate a man who has neither a record which cannot he assailed of else has no record in national matters. Among, this class of men no one fills the hill more perfectly than Judge Parker of New York. If nominated the question! would ho, asked by thousands v.ho is Parker? For except among the people ( of his own state and the lawyers <f ( the country he is practically unknown.! It will he remembered, however, that several candidates for the presidency ( have boon elected of whom it is said that even members of congress had not heard of them. When we con-j sidcr the recent division in the dem-, bcratic party on the money question anil the fact that no prominent silver man would suit the gold side and no gold man would he acceptable to the silver side, the only wav that these factions can he perfectly united is on some democrat who belongs strieflv to neither side Judge Parker hatter than nnv other man fills this hill. Rtrictlv a indue and in no sense n rc,tttlrian he thought it. unbecoming of the or mine to meddle in this muddle and slmnlv went to the pells as a eitiven and voted the domocratie pat ion a 1 ticket in both the campaigns of 190 C and pioo. Jt”e fs a democrat, and never has been anything lint a demoerat JTIs father before Mm was a JaeVsn nian and his grandfather was a .Tef fersonian democrat. JTo Is a farmer and a fudge and when -not upon the bench he is In the field. He is new chief justice of fho court of appeals in tlio state of New York and so groat is bis ponnlaritv, ryr no* count of his ability, his impartiality and bis rugged Integrity fb-.t in IRO7 lie was elected to ibis position by a majority of fiO.R3fi votes. This should be remembered was in the year fol lowing: when the democrats lost the state by over 250,000. He was first appointed to fill a vacancy on the su preme bench of New York by Gov- Hill and so satisfactory was he toi all the people, that both parties nominat ed him and he was elected without opposition. His standing as a lawyer and a Jurist is not surpassed by any man in the United States. He Is an anti-corporation judge, in that he is not a judge who is owned by a corpor ation but ,n all of his opinions has been exceedingly just and satisfactory to the laboring classes and to tho masses generally. Ho is known throughout the labor unions as the people's friend aud at tho same time be has never boon a demagogue or sacrificed justice to court popularity. If he is nominated be is certain to carry New York and New Jersey and there is no reason why every dem ocrat in the country should not be proud to vole for him. He is forty years of age in full vig or, mentally and physically and would make au exceedingly strong candidate. UNIQUE BREACH OF PROMISE. It is not an unusual thing, these days for perfidious man to be hauled into courts by some indignant female whose feelings he lias outraged and whose trust he has imposed upon, and required to pay daniagos for his breech oi promise. But is a rare occurrence —though it is a poor rule that wou't work both ways—when tho man ap peals to tho law to soothe his feelings by requiring damages from tho girl who jilted him. However, a London cablegram to tho Chicago Inter Ocean tells the story of a man who has just beeu awarded fJoe) pounds in such a ease. According to the story, f * ank Knight, a bicycle dealer, was pcisis tontiy courted by .Miss Constance \ an der llergin. Her parents opposed the match because of lvaight s poor cir cumstauces, but the girl was obstrcpi erous and finally wrote to Knight de claring they must elope. The lattci agreed to the propositon but was rude ly awakened from his dream oi bliss by the marriage of Miss ’. an der ilcr gli to another man. Ihe only excuse she gave to Knight was that she fear ed her mother might have an apolect ic tit if she married him. Knight was nod to he trifled with iu such a flippant way and brought sail for damages for breach of promise receiving as stated above a verdict tor -ail spuS ssoijauoti lo'l -spunod ukC ware. .
