Worth a Thought This Statement Will Interest Scores of Brunswick Readers. The facts given below are worth a persual by all who are anxious about their physical conduica or too su.. larly situated to the resident of Sa vannah. It is a local occurrence and can be thoroughly investigated. W. E. Woods, retired, residing at 103 President St., Savannah, says: "1 cannot speak too highly of Doan’s Kidney Pills. They acted promptly and effectually with me upon a very bad case of lame back from which I have been a great sufferer for quite a while. Thera was a dull heavy pain across my loins, a never ceasing backache day and night, but worse at night when It keeps me awake. At times i wa3 totally incapacitated for exertion of any kind, the secretions from the kidneys were very dark, contained a sediment and caused me any amount of trouble, especially at night, when my rest was much disturbed. I used any number of remedies but with no apparent benefit until I obtained Doan’s Kidney Pills. The results of their use were that the backache left me, the kidney secretions cleared up and did not bother me. I could go to bed and rest all night, getting up in the morning rested and I felt better In every way.” Plenty more proof like this from Brunswick people. BYRON WAS BARRED. Dfta of Westminster Refused to As cept Statue of Poet. Many years ago some admirers a Lord Byron raised a subscription for < monument to the poet to be placed ii Westminster abbey. Cbautrey was re quested to execute it, but on nceoun of the smallness of the sum subscribed he declined, and Thorwnldsen wai then applied- to and cheerfully under took the wfi. k. In about lSj:; the ti-.islied statue ur rived at the custom house in London, but. to the astonishment of the sub Bcribers, the dean of Westminster. 7>r. Ireland, declined to give permission U have it set up in the abbey, and. owing to this difficulty, which proved in: .j mountable, for Dr. Ireland’s sneces'W was of the same opinion, it remainei for upward of twelve years in the eus tern bouse, when <1840.) it was rr moved to the library of Trinity col lege, Cambridge. The poet is represented in the statue of the size of life, seated on a ruin with his left foot resting on the frag ment of a column. In his right Ivuid he bolds a style up to his mouth; in his left a book, inscribed “Cliililo Harold,” He Is dressed iu a .Toci; cc.it and cloak Beside him or, the left is a skull, above which is the Athenian etc 1. The likeness Is of course posthumous. Tio.rvuulso. was horn Nov. 111, 1770, and died cl March 24, 1814.—Newcastle (Lug, Chronicle. A Moilel Surveyor. The Kingman Leader-Courier tells of an early day county surveyor in King man county, Kan., who neither pos sessed any instruments nor could have used them if he had. Ilis method of measuring land was to tie his ankles together with a cord that was Just long enough to allow him to step one fifth of a rod each time, and thus hob bled he would strike out, counting hits Steps until he had made a sufficient number to cover the desired distance. The cord or string used by him la fastening his legs together, says the Leader-Courier, was made or raw hide, so that when he was traveling through the grass of a morning when the dew was on it would become wet and stretch nearly a foot,, and so his steps were much longer ot a morning than they were of an evening after the Sun had dried the whang leather and shortened it Consequently the man having his land surveyed in the morn ing would have much more in his quarter section than his neighbor who had his work done in the afternoon These old surveys and corners then es tablished cause annoyance even to this m •-_ • 1 Do Kot Sleep on Tour Left Side. When a patient complains of a bad taste in his mouth every morniug on waking up, says a physician, the first question I ask him is as to the position he assumes when going to sleep. An Immense number of people sleep on the left side, and this Is the most com mon cause of the unpleasant taste which is generally attributed to dys pepsia. If a meal has been taken with in two or three hours of going to bed, to sleep on the left side is to give the stomach a task which it is difficult in the extreme to perform. The student of anatomy knows that all food enters and leaves the stomach on the right side, and hence sleeping ou the left side soon after eating involves a sort of pumping operation which is any thing but conducive to sound repose. Tho action of the heart is also inter fered with considerably, and the lungs are unduly compressed. It is probable that lying on the back is fcfie most nut ural position, but few- men can rest easily so, and hence it Is best to culti vate the habit of sleeping on the right side. It Is very largely a matter of habit, and the sooner it is acquired the better for the sleeper and the worse for the physician. Tile Bucket Shop. The name bucket shop is said to have originated in Chicago when legit imate brokers would not handle an or der for less than 5,000 bushels, and a lot of places sprang up where men of small means could speculate on a tri fling capital, as small as a dollar, and these speculators were spoken of con temptuously as buying and selling wheat by the bucket full. The term was eventually applied to all broker age In stocks and grain when the amounts dealt In were smaller than legitimate dealers or brokers would handle and more particularly to places where there were really no legitimate transactions, but where the proprietor and customer simply bet on the mar ket, the proprietor allowing the cus tomer to take either end of the bet in consideration of a commission, which to reality is his percentage In the game. “Caw* Merer* la Japanese. ▲ writer on children’s game* tn Jkpan says: “Blind man’s buff as played In Japan la quite the same aa the game played by western chU dren, but If you play It with Jap anese I may warn you not to aay *Oome here I’ In English to aay one you may be trying to catch.
