PUBLISHERS NOTICE
The Nows Publishing Company de

that all legal advertisements must be

to devote our space to such adver
tisements and wait on the courts for
the money.
Tho Atlanta Elks distributed $2,000
among the poor on Christmas. Won
der uid the newspaper men got any ot
it.
In the death of Judge Pope Harrow,
ini Savannah, Georgia loses one u£
her ablest jurists.
Our children must have been care
ful in dlsqhwrglng their Ore works,
hint a serious accident was reported.
There was not a more orderly city
In the country on Christmas than
Brunswick. This speaks well tor our
city.
‘ The average Brunswick merchant
Is now wearing one of those smiles
that won’t wear off. He enjoyed such
nn excellent Christmas business.
Macon's city council is soon to vote
on the question of whether or not the
saloons are to remove the screens, and
the Evening News asks if any of the
councilmen will get behind a screen
when they vote .
A GOOD INDICATION.
The Brunswick merchant, for the
past several months, has realized that
their city was Improving; that more
money was in circulation and that hot
ter times were surely ahead. The
bus!ues: that they enjoyed during the
present week has demonstrated that
fact beyond a doubt. Of course the
merchants always do a heavy business
Christmas, but never before has there
been such business enjoyed in the
3 tores cf this city and every merchant
gives out the report that his Christ
mas business this year was the great
est la their history.
That Brunswick is on a more solid
financial basis today than she has
ever been, there i9 no doubt. Our
business men have watched the steady
progress of the city during the past
twelve months. There has been a
growth, a steady, gradual growth, the
kind that always counts in the end.
n-0 now on the threshold of a (
new year. There are many good
things coming with It for our clt' T ANARUS,
but they are not coming without en
invitation, that is, our people must
show the proper spirit.
Take us as a whole, there is not a
more enterprising communinty to he
found anywhere, but Brunswick has
always had one state of affairs that
has served to retard our progress
more than all of the other troubles
combined —not a friendly enough feel
ing has existed between all of citizens
due probably to polities. This uncall
ed for condition now seems to be at
an end and everyone will agree that
the people of Brunswick are closer
together today than they have been In
years past. That is all we need to
build up our city, and that we must
have. We must work in harmony
pull together, and always think of our
city's interest, and a greater city is
sure to be the result.
Lets begiu tbe new year by for
getting ail our personal differences, '
our political enmity, our little griev
ances against one another, which j
should never be brought into business |
circles, and when the next new year
rolls around, every person In Bruns
wick will see what has been done in
the line of progress.
Indeed, the future Is bright, but the
situation is in our hands; wo have
already started in the direction of pro
gress; let’s not meander.
SENATOR BACON’S RESOLUTION.
The Louisville Courier-Journal pub
lishes a leading editorial on Senator
Bacon's resolution of Inquiry regard
ing the tariff iniquity. The Courior-
JoMrnal says that if the resolution
was adopted by the senate and fairly
answered it) would (throw vlaluabde
light on the tariff of prorteetion
which enriches so many of the favor
ed class at the expense of the consum
er. The staple argument in advocacy
of an excuse for a high tariff is
that it enables the home manufacturer
successfully tot compete with the cheap
labor of Europe and other countries.
Tills implies that without the tariff
which operates ns a bounty to the
manufacturers the goods for which
prcftectiMn |)s demanded emiSd
not bo produced by the home
manufacturer at a cost which would
enable him to undersell the article
of foreign import, much less similiar
foreign-made articles in foreign mar
kets.
The Courier Journal proceeds to say
with much emphasis, and yet it is no
torious that, in the face of this per
sistent contention, there is a large
and growing export trade in such ar
ticles, made in America, which are sold
in foreign markets in successful com
petition with articles made there by
this cheap labor, and with cost of car
riage added, at lower prices than are
sold here.
Tho Courier-Jouranl argues at con
siderable length in favor of Senator
Bacon s resolution, but says, with deep
regret, that tho large majority behind
which the tariff robbery system is en
trenched in congress renders ail ef
forts for its correction impossible.
Mr. Bocan's resolution has been refer
red to the committee on finance, of
which Senator Aldrich, of Rhode Isl
ad, is chairman, and that will prob
ably ho the lisa of it, is the linal sigh
of cur contemporary.
Senator Bacon's resolution of inquiry
has given the country something to
think about.
Was the poor of Brunswick forgotten
this year? There are a number of
people In the city who were unable to
enjoy Christmas because of poverty
and we regret lhat they were not
made a little happy by seme cf the
charitable organizations.
The Atlanta Journal in an editorial
praises south Georgia for the inter
est taken by this section in the move
ment for a Georgia building nt St.
Louis. The committee which Las
been visiting us has reported that the.'
found live people enthusiastic over
the building. Brunswick will no doubt
subscribe liberally to the building.
