A REMARKABLE SENTIMENT
A most extraordinary spectacle whs
witnessed at Plymouth, Moss., one
day last week when Retnido Zeochl,
who had tried to kill his sweetheart
and had killed himself, was burled.
A brass baud beaded the cortege
and by the side of the hearse wajk
ed forty girls bearing flowers. At
the grave speeches were made -4h
which the dead man was extoilet
as cnurageos because he had taken his
own life when he believed that he
had committed the murder. And as
the coffin was lowered and the grave
was closed, flowers were again heap
ed upon It.
Thus might one have b*en buried
with propriety, who had lost his life
In heroic endeavor to save the lives
of others, or who through some other
set for the welfare of his fellow uieu
had won their affection and esteem
What reason or excuse those who
took part m this strange demountra

the would-be murderer and the sui
ride with posthumous honors cannot
be even imagined.

to the effect that the First Infantry
had used genuine trail cartridges in
one of the mimic battles at the recent

for this reason we are even more con
cerned in the matter. The following
editorial, from the Savannah Press
will bo appreciated by the people of
Brunswick and especially those 111
tcrested in flic military circles of the
city:
"The unequivocal denial of the
story, which eminated from Chatta
nooga, to the effect that tile First in
fantry had used ball cartridges in'
one of Ihe mimic battles a* CliieUa-;
manga. Is gratifying to 1 li<- friends 01
that excellent regiment. The man
ner lu which the army officers
"nailed the lie," to appropriate their!
own language, would leave no room
to escape from the conclusion that'
Ihe report was without the slightest!
foundation in fact; even did we not
have tlie word of the ofheers of Ihe
regiment itself, which in itself is .1
sufficient denial.
"It seems that the report was not
verified by the rgirrespoiuleiil wlei
sent It out. Col. (Jordon himself <1 i I
not hear of il until hours after It lm I

and after 110 had left Chickamauga
and was on the way home. The army
officers received their first intelll
genre of il through the Chattanooga
prints, so if would seem that no effort
was made to officially verify the
charge.
"In view of lho ehnra.etei' of tin
charge it is a matter of great con
cern and untold gratification to the
regiment that it was so fortunate to
have had men in command at the
Chickamauga camp wliti woulml spare
no pains in vigorously denying the
charge. TlTelr activity is prompted, no
doubt by the consciousness of the fal
sity of the charge and the thanks they
owe tiie regiment for Its splendid ser
vice at the maneuvers.
"Far from having received adverse
criticism at the encampment, the of
fleers and men received nothing hut
unstinted praise. If is unconceivable
how reports, such as these, can
spring up with such persistency at
military encampments. At Manassas
