THE PORT RATE QUESTION.
Do the wholesale merchants of
Brunswick object to a cheaper freight
rate to all lnterlour points in the
state of Georgia.
If so, then they do not want to
see the railroad commission force the
railroads to adopt rates common
ly called port rates.
That's ali there Is to it and it does
uot take a very wise man to find the
logical cnclusion. Hon. Hoke Smith
insists that there should he no qot
luslon itetween steamship lines and
railroad lines whereby one class <>i
transportation comianles are permu
ted to charge about one- third more
lor the same class of fieight lima
It permits lines NOT Til US CU.M,
HIKED TO CHARGE.
The operation of port rates in bolie
Brunswick and Savannah would . • i > -
to stimulate the jobbing business of
the two port#, for it would work
such reductions in freight rates that
merchants at the Interior points wouM
seek the wholesale markets of Hum
wick and Savannah
That the matter may lie made cleaf
to the average mind II is wet,
to study the following statement, mad-,
by Mr. Smith on the subject:
“The port rate fight is simply an
effort "Hi compel the railroad c onpan
ies to give lower rates from the ports
to Interior points.
“The railroads, in combination with
certain steamship lines, receive cer
tain rates on different classes of
freight. If freight is brought to Di uns
wick or Savannah by indcnc-ic-cr.t
boats, the railroad coir,mission ocr
mits the railroads to charge about
one-third moro tha nthe railroads re
ceive when the freight is brouoht to
our ports by the steamboats alone
with which they are in comhln.it on,
"I insist that the railroad commis
sion should reduce the rates from our
ports to all lnterlour points and com
pel the owners tc charge no higher
T-ate-e Whepi an independent vessel
brings the freight to Brunswick or
Savannah than they charge when the
lines with which they are in combin
ation bring the freight.
“The effect of this reduction of
rates would be to give far better rates
all over Georgia to the jobbing trade
of Brunswick and Savannah. Nothing
could be done tor either of these oil -
ies that would help them so much. It
would also bring independent ship--,
into our ports.”
Surely there Is noth lug plainer than
these simple words and the business
men of Brunswick should itomlcr ovci
them before voting In the primary
next week.
IT IS ABSURD.
Rivalry for naval supremacy, espoc
tally among the nations of the Old
World, continues with unbilled zeal.
The recent announcement that Italy
is building a battleship bigger ami
more powerful than the much talked
of Drcadnaught. lias already caused
:t panic among certain patriotic Brit
ons who regard it as a downright
outrage.
The Drcadnaught, with Its i5.500
tons displacement., its 12 Inch gnus
and Its ability to throw 6,800 pounds
of metal In a broadside, was looked
upon as the act mil limit in battle
ship arohlte dure. However the It,m
tan boat is to be -licitli speedier and
more formidable, having Dl-ineli guns
and throwing a broadside weighing
10,000 pounds. As such a vessel
could ptt-k it's own battleground an t
smash a half dozen I'ivadnaiiglits In
detail fYom a safe distance, there is
now a frenzied demand that the Brit
ish government proceed to 1 ulld some
tiling still larger. Viewed in this light
the situation presented is an absur
dity. Commenting on the phase of it
the Chicago News says:
“Italy's ambitious effort and Great
Uriuan'S consequent jealousy
typify the competition that has liee-i
going on among the first class sea
powers, which are watching and im
Bating one another with a zeal truly
comic.
Franca, which in 1901 was content
to build 14,000 ion battleships, saw
lts neighbor a, ross the channel au
thorising ships or 16,000 tons and
made haste to plan six ships of IS,
000 lons. Germany, which was laying
dowu vessels at 11,1*00 and 13,000 lons
a few years ugo, also arranged to have
its next battleships of 18,000 tons.
Kussia and Japan are also follow iug
suit and the late session of congress
saw most of the naval experts clone
oring for a battleship of 20,000 tons.'
