Mrs. Myriclt, of Amerious, loves no

Col. Until! has visited Bruuswick

thought lie was a candidate for gov

Strange, indeed, that some Bruns

negro disfranchisement. What. in
tin- long run, is the difference?
COULD JAPAN LICK US?
“If Japan should take the unfortu

for a quarrel with the United States,
rays Ex-Capt. and Congressman pro
suniptive Richmond P. liolmon. "and
the matter should reach a critical
stage, she would have the advantage

Evidently Capt Hu: son regards the
posaoseir.n of the Philippines as the
only'Consideration iho United States
would have In a war with Japan and
the islands being lost to us we would
admit defeat and close the record.
On that premise his argument is
doubtless well made that Japan would
have a marked advantage over us tn
a war entered upon at this time.
The PhilUpincs are far from the
United States end close to Japan and
the Japanese could probably take the
islands within a few w.u-ks of the
beginning of operutious. lint it is
not lffcely that we should drop the
thiug at that stage. . Should we be
willing to go to war for tne island at

FORCING THE IDLE TO WORK
Alderman W. H. Wright, of Savau
nah. who is superintendent of the
Savannah division of the Atlantic
Coast Line, Is quoted by the Morning
News, of that city, sb follows:
"The enforcement of the vagrancy
law and the arrest of all negroes
have resulted in a great good to all
the employes here.
"The benefit has been 101 l by all
classes of employes. There are nior<
available laborers in Savannah nov.
than at any time during the last sev
eral years, and It Is all through tb •
proper enforcement of the vagrancy
liws. The fertilizer men, lumber
dealers, transportation companies,
both steamship lines and tall road .
and. in fact, ail kinds of buslm-sse
now find It easier to get hands.
"U has be' n said that some nc
groes have left town on account oi
the enforcement of the vagruney law
•but this is not true to any apprecia
ble extent. So far as the Coast Lin.
is concerned there Is now no short
age tit all In men either in the yuVd
or al the wharves and in every line
of business tt is now found to be much
easier to get the negroes to work
"And II is a good tiling for the ne
groes themselves too. Tim enfo.iv
merit of the law w eds out the worth
lew and there Is plentv of work leir
for those who want it.
“One thing 1 want to impress aim
that Is that the police should not let
tip in the matter. While they have
been doing well, they are not quite
<lO active and vigilant us they worn
at the beginning of-the crusade. Tim
crusade hhould tie kept up right along
arresting only the idle, ol course. Thu
vagrancy law, to be really effective,
should tie enforced, not for a few
weeks, hut the year round, and ruts
Is what l believe the police will do
"That statement eptomizes admir
ably the benefits that come to a com
munity from the proper enforcement
of laws against vagrant y and every
community should have such laws and
should enforce them tigldly. Mr
IVrlght’s reference to enforcement e
particularly Important. He is entire
ly right In saying that the vagrancy
law to really he effective should bn
enforced, not for weeks, bid the j ar
round.
We have a vagrancy law In Brim
wick and every now and thou a “cru
sade” is declared by the police un
der its terms and for a day or two
a few score of idle negroes, who are
about by the hundreds, are brought
In and one or two of them sent to
the elm ingang. And that is a bout ah
wo have of It. There is plenty or
work to be done in Brunswick, but it
Is not easy to got men to do it. (bough
there are some hundreds of able-bod
ied negroes loafing about the streets
living In the community without any
return.
A' strict and unflusgying enforce
ment of the vagrancy laws in lirum
wick would have the same good el
feet that is reported In Rnvanr.nh. We
should permit uo Idlers in litis com
munity.
