FINEST BANK NOTE PAPER. :
Where the Material For tiur tireeo

The national dag flies ov the “gov

family at Haiton. Mass.. cause all
tii,- paper for the United s I!es green
backs is made there. It one of a
group of in 11 is in which the Cranes
have made paper for more than a cen
tury. The founder was Zenas Crane.
Before he could get the first mill start
ed he had to have a large quantity of
rags. But rags were scarcer in those
day’s than now. The Italian 1t.;,1 not .
then arrived, the Junk shop w.i - un
known. and, although the rag buyer
passed through the street -. of Boston
once a week, he had not yet appeared
in the western part of the state. This
resulted in an appeal to the people,
based on high economic and patriotic
grounds. Handbills appeared with tint
headlines in large type: • Americans,
encourage your own manufactures,
and fhev will improve! Ladies, save
yonr rags!”
! They were carried to nil the homes
ami shops in Berkshire* and Ijoiuing
counties, urging “every woman who
has the good t)f her country and the
interests of her*’family at heart" to
save her, rags and send them to the
new factory or to the nearest store
keeper, “ami a generous price will be
paid.” When the mill was ready the
rags were there in abundance, and op
erations at once commenced. The
working force consisted of four nten, :
two girls and a small boy. with Zenas
Crane as superintendent and chief pro- !
prietor. The paper was made in hand
molds, and the output was hit) pounds
a day. Today tile output is mlßf!-
tons of the finest batik note paper.—

Presence <>; tuiud.
An example of presence of mind was
that of a wujaiti who. being left alone
in the limtswoiio night, heard a noise
in the dining room and knew that bur
glars were removing the plate. She
was too far from any other house to
summon assistance. Seizing a large
paper bag which lay on a table, she In
flated it and broke It on the wall of the
stairs with u loud report. Tito thieves,
-mistaking it for a pistol, dropped their
plunder and fled. There is no quality
perhaps which we Hit covet in..re than
this ready wit which makes notion us
