AS TO THE INSURRECTION.
There is a good deal of comedy in I
the reports from the alleged insurrec
tion in Cuba. The invariable beau
tiful women w'ho leads columns of re
bels dashingly and victoriously
against the government has made her
appearance, but as yet the victories
are nominal. Claims of fifteen to
twenty thousand patriots in the field
come to us dazzling]}’, but why they
do not sweep away the two or three
thousand government soldiers and po
lice is not explained. If the stories
of two weeks ago were true, or an
proxtately so, the insurrection
should now be In possession of every
city on flie island except possibly
those portions of Havana Included in
the forts.
It Is Indicated by the trend of 1
events that the Insurrection Is most
ly In progress In the papers a move
on the political chessboard. It may
win at least partially in securing con
cessions from the party in power to
tbe party out of power. If the claims
of the revolutionists are all based on
facts there are some real grievances
from which they suffer not so muen
in other respects as in their pride
and sense of fair play, and the gov
erning power would do well and witteiy
to reform certain abuses, it in t„
be hoped that the negotiations for
peace will bo successful, as (here is
in dispute nothing really worth fight
ing about. Both sides are to blant,-.
One for withholding certain rights,
the other for taking arms to gain
them when tiiey are not worth it

According to the revelations belt: •
made by the legislative investigation
committee Into the conduct of .the
Confederate veterans’ home iy Atlan
ta. there has been wrong doing thorn
in mioh a degree as to nauseate the
people of Georgia and at the same
time stigmatize the entire people of
the state In the eyes of the who!:;
country.
That graft and greed and maltreat
ment, view, whiskey and bad women
should he found lit thin, Ilie retreat
of the old soldiers, is something abso
lutely horrible ami is enough to ex
cite tbe jnpt indignation of every
true Georgian in the land.
Some of the testimony shows a con
ditlon of eveil existing in the old sol

people of the state to blush with
shame and reflects the deepest char

state, through whose trail offices such
men and such women found lodge

only shelter the suite of Georgia
for her noble sons who gave their
best days for their country's cause
and who are now Audi into tbe even
ing shadows of their lives.
It Is to be hoped that the committee
ftp|M)lnted tty the legislature will probe
tills disgraceful scandal to the very
bottom, find the "guilty parties and
expose them to the view of till the
world. No white .vault brush should
cover the besmirched record of those
who are responsible for this descent
tlon of these-old fellows-home aul
the proper punishment should be ban

manner.
The people of Georgia should vote
for the court of appeals. It will re
lieve the congested condition of the
supreme court and is badly needed.

Tlie Nine In the Calendar.
The figure 0, which came into the
calendar on Jan. 1, 1889, will stay with
us 111 years from that date, or until
Dec. 31, 1990. No other figure has ever
had such a long consecutive run, and
the 0 Itself has only once before been
In a race which lasted over a century—
that in which it continuously figured
from Jan. 1, 889, until Dec. 31, 999, a
period of 111 years. The figures 8 and
7 occasionally fall Into odd combina
tions, but neither of them has ever yet
served for a longer period than 100
consecutive years In our calendar since
the present mode of calculating lime
was established. It is also clear that
from their relative positions among the
numerals it is an impossibility for
either of them to appear in date reck
oßings continuously for a longer period
titan a century.
