The h' iniiii’;■ of the operation of
the railroad regulating law passed bv
congress has not been accompanied
by any convulsions —unless the send
off ' 'i.- .uent by the big rail
road ii ■ /' that the roads were go
lug out of politics may be regarded
as a spasm. If It proves to be true
it will bring about a condition that
will be approved by the judgment of
all Intelligent men, and it will at the
same time rebound to the benellt oi
the roads morally and Iflnuncially
There never has been any sufficient
reasons why railroads should engage
iu politics, and it Is only fair to state
that the fault of their being engaged (
therein is not essentially that of the
roads themselves.
The evil has been one of slow
growth, and it may be laid—like most
other sins of political commission—
at the door of the republican party.
In the beginning the roads were dra
gooned into the service of that party
through their attorneys, who have
throughout the north genertlly beer
of the republican brand. These at
torneys, being ardent republicans and
knowing the value of the weapon lu
their hands, began to use It Aua
with such success that it spread.
Then tin roads begun to Invite it In
order to control democratic politics
in localities in states, and the thing
went ou until the control of many
states ami congressional districts was
completely iu the hands of the rail
road managers or strikers The pet>,
pie began to revolt, and the result
has been to overthrow the railroads,
so far as controlling politics was con
cerned
The battle has not been pushed any
further than to accomplish the partial
expulsion of the railroads from poli
tics. ami if the corporations wisely
complete the operation by complete
voluntary withdrawal they will be al
lowed to retire undisturbed. They
tnay depend upon being treated fairly
matters of legislation hereafter.
PRESIDENT SMALL’S Liff^R.
Elsewhere In thte Issue will tie
found a very Interesting letter from
President A. B Small, of the Macon
Charmber of Commerce, with refer-
ence to an editorial and a news story
which appeared In The Mews several I
: days ago, charging that j the steamer
j Nan Elizabeth had discriminated 'n
the matter of rising to handle
fireight from Brunswick to river
points on the Ocmulgee.
The News Is pleased at the atti
tude of President Small in the mai
ler. However, he Is not quite correct
in all of his statements Asa matter
of fact freight wa tendered the Nan
by a Brunswick wholesale house arm
;
the shipment .vyas -refused by the
steamer. Probably, however, that
was due to an over loaded cargo anu
we are willing to believe that was
the case. /
The Brunswick merchant who wan
ted to ship i small amount of goods
to some river point very llkeivj
would not Ijavo written to Macon for
rates, but Fould very naturally have
expected tf> receive them at the I
ship's sida Regarding to that por
tion of tha letter of President Smalt
referring to the "allotment, of stock
to Brunswick," we do not know who
could havft authoritlvely asserted
that Bruns'rick would not subscribe
for stock 1 1 the Macon and Bruns
wick Navigation Company. Has Mr.
Small or asy of his associates can
vassed the < ity for stock subscriptions
to the ente "prise?
Brunswick people are energetic
and progressive and If the investment
is a souni/ one and President Smaii
will visit feruswlck and go over the
situation F lth our business men, wej
are quite t sure, he will receive the
proper etidoinagement at their hand
We are! compelled to take issue
with the | statement of President
Small thatlthere has been any effort
in Brunswick to place the Macon ano
Brunswick Navigation Company i ri a
bad light, oil If such a conspiracy lias
existed, the| we are absolutely in
the dark on the subject.
So far as The News *ls concerned,
wo have aldwl the move from time
to time, and Vve hope It will mater
ialize and grow to be a great big
link In the commerce of the two ci
ties and we assure President Small
that the articles published by The
News were in the interest of Bruns
wick, rather than agalns'.; his -project.
Brunswick would lie a very odd cit,
If she did not welcome new enter
prises; however she would be equal
ly at right angles with all healthy
commercial laws if she did not guard
and protect her own Interests and
her commerce.
