THE INEVITABLE.
Tliere can be but one ultimate
outcome of the disorder which pre
vails In Cuba, and that is the an
nexation of the island to the United
States. The News is of the opinion
that the sooner this step is taken
the l iter it will he for all parties
concerned
The S nate made a mistake when
it inserted the word "independent"
in the Cuba itreafiy, whereby that
island was turped loose on its own
lesponsifldlity, After we had taken it
from the tyradical clutches of Spain
Senator Morgan, of Alabama, at the
time the treaty was under discus
sion in the/senate, pointed out the
danger of employing this word anl
his far sigliSed wisdom is now appar
ent. But (he word “independent
will not bei allowed to interfere with
tdie dictated of humanity, the protec
i a of isu ge property interests oi
the stability of peaceful conditions on
this hemisphere when the time
on.ea to fet. and the time for action
ms to .be pretty close at hand.
As a matter of fact armed forces are
now practically in Cuba forces of
the Unite l States, and pretty soon
they will intervene in no uncertain
manner. tVe are going to take Cuba
end that'aLlT there is to it. It will
not lie d<i,e until the Washington
government thinks it auspicious and
the Cuban Ihlmself ,will be the chief j
beneficiary- 1 They seem to he unable
to maintainla stable government over
in Cubu an $ there is no Indication
that they will ever be able to do no. j
A strong arm Is needed to Insure;
safety and stability in the Island,;
and Uncle Step is the possessor/ of,
that strong awn. The Cuban prob
lem is waiting W our very doors for
solution. Its up to the ' President
•right now and lie <au he rolled upon
to handle the situation firmly. The
part lliat congress will play in the
matter will come a little later.
TREAT THEM fALL ALIKE.
Tlie News has the greatest respect
iu the world for tip members of the
uoard of health of/the city of Bruns
wick,. They are /good citizens and
they do a great service to the city
all for tho cuusa of civic patriotism.
There is no Salary consideration
with the timmijferß of this organiza
tion and surelJ theirs is a work of
love. Howeveu we desire to submit
to the board and few propositions this
morning and Ave ask their kind con
sideration of/ the facts contained
therein. /
Now, aa (lit iioard probably knows,
tho Soulherti Bell Telephone Com
pany have asked the council for a
permit to liy their condolts on tho
streets of t o city at ence, in order
to give Bru swlek an up to date tele
phone r.yesti m. The council has re
ferred the matter to the board o
health and hero it remains, ulthnugl
tlie (elephe lie people are awaiting
the word from the ‘board to com
mence wait on their improvements.
Of court i The News understands
that there is an ordinance against
tlie upturn tig of tlie earth from tho
first of Mn to the first of November
of each yi ar, but the ordinance has
been confo mud to more in the breach
than In th i observance this year and
we Insist hat at this late hour It is
unfair to r iake the Bell Company toe
the mark
The city council itself has volated
this ordiatt :e time and time again.
Witt n it in t down sewer pipes seven
to ten feel deep on Howe street in
June and .1 ily it slapped its own law
in the fart ; when the pubic works
department did a great majority of its
street work all the summer It disre
garded the ardinance When the A.,
XI. and A. i eople started work on Its
passenger s ation It excavated for tlvo
or six fe t below the surface, hut
were not topped. The contratitors
now btiidli g the new court house
have violat and the ordnance half a do;:- 1
eu times lc their work, but the work
goes right along
Now all ,ve ask is that all part lea
desiring to make public Improvement
be placed an the same foundation.
1-et's don't make lls.h of one and
fowl of tie other. The telephone
company is v anxious to commence
work at one*!; this is the latter part
of September and if other parties
were allowed to excavate in June,
July and August, why should uot the
Southern Hell Telephone Company do
so in the last of September, when it
has many thousands of dollars to ex
pend in the enterprise. In which all of
Brunswick is deeply interested.
We wouJd like for the board of

Tlie summer is too well into fall
for any fear of health disturbances
from excavations new and the board
of health should let the Bell Tele

Now then, gentlemen of the Board
of Health, wiiat is the difference
between breaking the earth to lay
