AS TO A SOUTHERN MAN.
The usual number of suggestions
about nominating a Southern man
| democratic candidate for the prest
' dency which go the rounds of Southern
' newspapers a year or so before the
campaign actively opens are being re
vived, as was expected. This is not
unnatural when It is remembered how
; easy it is for local patriotism and
; what may appear to be an altogether
reasonable claim to run away with!
the practical and the expedient side
of a qu stlon.
It is not surprising that the South
ern democrats who have been loyal to
i the democratic party and solid in re
! turning their votes to the electoral
college all these years should feel that
i'i-cy are being shabbily treated in .
denial of representation on the party's!
. national ticket. It suggests Ingratitude i
and iaclt of appreciation on the pari!
of the national democracy to continue |
:to ignore the South in tills matle-. ;
■'mre are, however, other than senti
mental and patriotic views to ibe eon- j
■ idered, and chief among these Is the
j . aetieal view. The claim in made
uat the South Is entitled to this recog
nition from tho national democracy
because the Southern states contri
bute more votes to the electoral
college than does any other section
of (he country, in answer to till-,
claim a trustworthy writer who him
self favors the election to the pres
idency of a good, strong democrat
states that "of the 5,000,000 votes cast
at the last election for the demo
cratic candidate for the presidency
1,350,000, or less than 30 per cent.,
■were cast in the fourteen Southern
states.’ In other words the South is >.
iong way from tne majority of the
democratic strength of the country,
liven if such were true, however, fol
lowing the argument based on the
number of votes to the electoral col
lege to Its logical conclusion, the
nominee would have to come from
Texas, since that state returns tho
largest vote of any of the Southern
states. Georgia would have a prior
claim over Alabama, and so on down
the line, according to the standing of
the states in the electoral college.
But another thing. The statesmen
of the South, the men who know poli
tical conditions in this country, rea
lize that insistence that the South
take the leadership in the party wia
result in the revival of sectionalism
which always does injury to the
South, which is now engaged in vast
industrial development and which dues
not desire and can not, in fact, at
ford a periodical outbreaking of old
sores.
The real argument again st the nom
ination of a Southern man is ad
vanced from the practical side. No
body doubts that in the South there
arc men of sufficient ability, charade
and patriotism to fill the position of
President with credit to themselves
and \ honor to the nation.
1 oi tin question. The question is;
Can a Sodthenaosnan win One cu t
wit* enough votes to get to the
White lions* is worth to the South a
dozen without them. A Southern man
cannot be elected President of the
l tiled States in 1908, if indeed, for
two terras following.
