Mr. Pratt and Ills associates win
have to get a right lively move on n
do things by November 10. But then,
knowing ones say the whole matter
bus been llxt-d any way.
Jerome suys he swears he will not
vote for Hears!. It Is a pretty bit to.
pill, we confess, still Mr. Jerome
ought not to go hack on the demo
cratlc party. He lias liad too mattj

THE STATE ROAD MATTER AGAIN
The Atlanta Journal, always a grea.
believer in the betterment of the con
dition of the state of Georgia, is H ik
ing a very strong light for the ex ten
slon of the state road to the sea. In
Its Issue of Sunday last the Journal
shows by comparative statement
with other lines just.what possibili
ties in the way of revenues await the
state of Georgia, the moment, it places
Its railroad property into tide water.
The Journal is usually very careful
in Its treatment of groat, subjects such
as this one and Its editorial of Sun
day must have a convincing effect on
all classes of people who will take the
time and the trouble to carefully look
into the proposed extension of the
line, so as to make it a great con
necting point with tin* centers of trade
and traffic in the east, it is unques
tionably the proper thing for the state
of Georgia to do and we are quite
persuaded that the next session of
the legislature will take up the mat
ter amt pass a bill carrying with It
the power to build the line to the sea.
Now with all of the above out linen
tacts before us, The News scarcely
feels it to be Its duty to call attention
to the necessity for some concerted
action on the part of the authorities
of Brunswick looking to this great
enterprise finding a port right here at
Brunswick. We have many advan
tages over any other Georgia port.
We are nearer to Atlanta titan ts
Savannah and we are now in line for
u great industrial growth and develop
ment. Our close proximity to the sen
is another advantage and with a thirty
ft ait channel already projected for by
the federal government, what other
inducements could the state of Georgia
desire?
The News is absolutely sure that
the bill will pass at the June session
of the general assembly and we be
lieve that the time has arrived when
Brunswick should make a strong and
united light to capture this new Hue.
it is squarely up to the people ot
Brunswick themselves, and in view oi
all conditions and < ircumstances, we
are forced to the faith that the rlgV.
kind of work and energy will land this
great Industrial prize for Brunswick.
Let the commercial bodies and the
mayor and counoil Lake this subject up
Without any faith ui delay.
iVhaT BRUNSWICK WANTS IN 1907
The very atmosphere is full of
municipal talk here in Brunswick.
On all sides wc can hear it and on
ail sides, except in the homes of tne
trained politicians, there is a deman 1
for a man for mayor of Brunswick, |
who is not aliigued with either of the
old political factions and who is will
ing to assume the office on thegreat
and far rea him? platform of “Progress
and Prosperity." To our rut rid the
time has come In Brunswick, when
men should be forgotten and measures
should be the great propelling force In
the matter of selecting the men to
preside over the destinies of the city
j of Brunswick for the next two years.
We want men, genuine men, not j
toad . tools of sharp and designing!
j politicians and office hunters. VV<?
want a board of aldermen next year
who will not be obstructionists lu tie
wave of prosperity now upon us in
spite of a city council which has
closed its eyes to all character of pub- j
lie improvements that did not eminate
from some of its own kith and clan.;
The news has great respect for some:
members of the city council, yet it is
a painful laet that the majority ot i
that body has been partisan in tip;
administration ol the public allairs
during the year now drawing to a
close.
Lets avoid the possibility of such a
re-occu-ience in the future; b is come
together on common ground, wipe on; j
politics and old sores of the past, giv.j-i
the politicians and standing candi
dates for every job in sight a solar j
plexus blow and put business men in :
the city council.
The News is frank to say that 't 1
has no candidates for municipal hon
ors; n is not interested in tin per
sound of the council for I'JOT, but it i
wants to see the body composed of .
men, committed to principles looking ;
singly to ibe betterment mid tin* im 1
provcinent of this splendid little city, j
The city council for iJUT ought to
right the evil of the present hoard,
by providing tliu city ol Brunswick
with a system of trolley lines bclore
the end of its first year.
It ought to change the reprehensi
ble custom now in vogue in the cit>
hull of borrowing money here in
Brunswick at eight per cent., when it
can be secured in the open markets of
the country at four and five per cent.
II ought to do away with the provin
cial idea now dominating in the a.
lairs of the city, that make possible
the stopping of a great work like the
Southern lied people propose to do
here, for no good and sound reason,
it ought above all things protect and
save the integrity of the city in all of
its dealings with financiers coming
here to locate, as for instance the un
happy incident whereby the city coun
cil deeded certain property to the
A., li. A. A. pledging its word ot liouo,
to transfer it in fee simple to that
corporation and then having the
board of education, a body created by
the city council, go to Atlanta and
block tne legislation necessary to
Brunswick's lueping a solemn aim
pledged obligation, with people wlu
are going to spend >a million dollars
or more in Ibis city!
In short, give ns new material;
men who have not been chasing puli
tie rainbows in Brunswick all of lliei
uves; men who are untrammelled and
free from tangling alliance with hide
bound iHilitical oligarchies; men who
will siami for the growth and progres -
of Brunswick first, last and ail the
time, and we will support them it
matters not whence conn s their niuii:
nations.
That what Brunswick wauls in Dm,
Those In bans are ccrlainiy a lutm
lot to satisfy.
Ilolte Smith will do the las*, pre
liminary stunt before the inaugura
tion today.
When Brunswick recalls the hor
rors of .Mo lie and lVusacola, site
ought to have a thanksgiving day of
her own
is it not remarkable that the candi
date who is always read) and willing
down in his heart has to be peti
tioned the strongest?
•From all indications the A.. B. & A.
tuts put the Southern, the Darien At
Western and several other lines to
thinking about Brunswick.
