Macon Is playing host to all Georgia Mils week and lucky is Hie fellow who falls Into hospitality of those Central City folk. That letter of President Emerson, of tiie Darien & Western certainly ought to move the people of Brunswick lo speed'' and enthusiastic action. President Palma, of Cuba, is uo.v a full member of the "Down and out club," and has the perfect right t > use the prefix ex" to his name. The fellow with a little surpln money, a whole bunch of energy and some common sense, can make all kinds of money here in Brunswick in almost any line. Those Roosevelt rough riders wilt hardly reorganize for service in Cuba Why bless ybur souls, they are alt busy holding down federal Jobs. The chances are that the Cubans will take right hold of that bob-tall spelling system of the President. They generally do not care whether thev do things right or not. Thai letter of President Emerson bad the proper ring to It to our mind and opened goldeu opportunities to Brunswick, If she will have the com inon tense and the energy to see them. Give the people of Brunswick five good men for the uldermauic board next year, who wilt go Into office pledged to the platform of "Progress and Prosperity,” who are not profer •tonal politicians and standing dfflre and the people will Jfcepf *• fU of Um oppotjLimy. WON'T YOU PLEASE WAKE UP? The News dislikes to wear one sub ject threadbare; it does not like the attitude of eternally ding-donging on i line topic, but really we do not know of a single matter of deeper im port to Brunswick, right at this par ticula: time than is the proposed plan of the Darien & Western railroad people to extend its line to Bruns wick. It seems to us that the people of Brunswick have not taken to this subject as cordially and as boldly as they should, or else they absolutely fail to realize the magnitude of the proposition made by President Emer son and his associates. Here is a piece of railroad property traversing a brand new territory, ready to open I up new markets for our merchant -t,| ready to put us in touch with a sec I lion of the state inaccessable at pres ent and ready to make Btunswick its deep water terminus; its port of ef fort and its general operative lieai <l u arte is Here we find the president of the line inviting the constituted authori ties of Brunswick to a conference with him on this very important mat ter; he lias stated that, his company looks with favor on the plan to ex tend the line to Brunswick and in turn asks Brunswick what she is will ing to do In the premises. Mr. Emerson does not lay down his ultimatum; lie does not demand tills concession or that one; lie does not. even fix the terms on which tie will build his line to Brunswick. He sim ply conies to us in a business-like fashion and says he wants to push liia line into tho best tide-water port on the Atlantic and asks for a con ference to discuss ways and means looking to liiat end. Now what bas Brunswick done to sliow her enterprise in the matter? What effort lias she made to convince President Emerson that she even wants this new line to connect her with one of the best and most pro gressive sections of the state? it seems to us that the city council might have called an extra session and discussed the matter. The Board of Trade and the Commercial League might have done the same tiling, and with commendable energy might have named committees to arrange an audience with Mr Emerson, in order that some tangible foundation for the work could be outlined. Brunswick must get out of tins lethargy. She must see net- own sell as tho industrial and business world is beginning to see her, and she must not let this splendid opportunity go by for the lack of simple energy. Won’t you please wake up? ’I Ini' big slick seems lo have had the same effect, down in Cuba as mother's slipper use to have when wo were hoys. Are yon a member of the Commer cial League? That organization is contributing to the development of Brunswick, and every patriotic and public spirited citizen should aid in the work by Joining the League. The Brunswick merchants naturally expert the patronage of the people at home. They have a right to. These local merchants are doing much to ward.! the building of this city, amt they should bo encouraged by your trade "Progress and Prosperity” in a good slogan for any set of candidates to adopt and that's whut Brunswick should d* mand of her municipal ticket this winter, taking good care to cut old politicians and standing office seekers completely out. We have a great big stick, a pair of brass knacks, a forty-four Colts, and a baseball hat for the next follow who comes along and says he Is going to build a hotel on St. Simon "la time Tor the coming summer," unless he shows us right away quick. Why Is It that the present city coun cil borrows money here in Brunswick at the rate of eight per cent., when other corporations and Individuals, with the proper credentials, can get all they want at four and five per cent? Will some councilman please answer that question for the benefit at tb tax payers of .Brunswick? tHt MVWSWitK vAii,V ffrihr, ocyobeh s, 190*; #y* # Ayef* Piilsar^ive^ills^The^ic^irectly # Any | m on the liver, make more bile secreted.
