IN HAVANA Great Damage Was Done to Property -Pfrfflfcfr-U. 5s Cruiser Brooklyn {if jfcported Ashore Havana, Oct. 19.—As a result of the terrible hurricane which swept island of Cuba yesterday, over one hundred people are dead in this city alone and reports from the interior will no doubt bring information of death and destruction in the path of the storm. • * The damage to property cannot be estimated, but it is known that it will run up into the millions. Of the dead it is known positively that a large majority of them are native Cubans, but it is certain that at least fifteen of the hundred killed at Havana are foreign residents. UNITED STATES CRUISER BROOKLYN BLOWN ASHORE The United States cruiser Brooklyn, which was anchored in the harbor here, was driven ashore and received serious damages, and this is also true of th other American 'port. The Brooklyn is still ashore but it <Js believd she can be floated with muct^llfficulty. The cyclone did its worse work in*r s vanity and for an area miles it carried everything before it. UNFAIR POLITICS RESORTED TO BT POLITICIANS ' All uf Candidates nn Peo ple's Ticket Favor White Primary TRYING TO TOOL PEOPLE Personal Organ of the Solicitor of the City Court Makes a Delib erate Effort to Mislead the Voters. The local administration politicians are resorting to some pretty unfair politics in their effort to fool the peo ple of the city as to the real poßi 'ion of the supporters of the candi dates on tho peoples' ticket for may or and aldermen, and as to the po sitiou of the candidates themselves with reference to Ibe white primary system here in Brunswick. There is not the slightest objection on the part of the peoples' ticket tu that system of electing the municipal ticket in November, and the only real reason that can be assigned for the -continuous assertions to the contrary on the part of the politicians above referrel to is a deliberate intention io mislead the citizens of Brunswick. The only reason for the calling of the mass meeting was in order- to give the people of Brfinswlck gener ally- an opportunity of suggesting the names of gentlemen whom they would like to see in public office In this city and to rebuke the custom-of others now in politico.; TfgijA ; u t.uis com munity of getting together in the or- ilce of an office-holder and forcing certain men upon the people.
