Address News Publishing Cos., Brunswick, Ga POLITICAL CLAP-TRAP Shrewd politicians and consistent office-holders have attempted to In fuse and to Inject into the present municipal contest some absurd and albeolutcly ridiculous ideas with ref erenoo to the relationship of tin Mutual Light and Water Company to the people of Brunswick. Wo dc. not. think tluit wo are taxing lit* attention ot the taxpayers, the vo; era and the citizens of Brunawicl generally when we invito you to go over a lew of the salient feature: of tills matter with us lu a hear to heart discussion of this particu lar phase of the campaign. In the first place there was never conceived In the Imagination of sltuX'Wd politicians a more erroneous idea titan is the one set forward in the organ of the solicitor of the city court to the effect that a continu ance of the present political power moans a reduction of 50 per cout In tbo rates on the important com modities of gas, electricity and wa ter in this city. To start with the oresent admiuls tration, through the \luiluences of the political party responsible for oresent conditions fin refusing to pass the Uale resolution has made such a condition an ImpoauibUtty. Common sense would teach us that a municipality could not possibly regulate Lite price of gas, water aud electricity until it had absolutely as sumed control of the plant that gen crates these forces under the con tract with the light and water com pany If the resolution proposed by Alderman Gale had boon i>assod and if the Mutual Light and Water Com pony hud actually passed Into the control of the city, as was proposed by the resolution, then the council might have made rates, otherwise how ridiculous to assume that they could do this any more than they could tit the iprlce of telephone ser vice, telegraph service or any other tike utility. In older that the people may thoroughly understand our position we desire to reiterate here that the Goodyear ticket is pledged to the platform upon which they were nom inated as regards Ute municipal ownership of public utliitios and the extension of the present contract with the Mutual ldgbt and Water Ca That u they favor the city owning and purchasing as speedily as possible the plant or slam* of tiie Mutual Light, and Water Go., and are ituquostlonably opposed to any extension of the contract now hold by that company. We hold that any agitation of thia matter by the city council is due to that specific platform upon which Col. Goodyear and his ticket were nominated, and we hold that If the city had acquired control of the |kt at Met Tueedar sight's aa don of the city council It would have seen directly due to tboir attitude j aoncernlng this most important mat or. The News is quite persuaded that .he past lives of the people's candi dates In this community, lnd'.vidu tlly and collectively, ought to he the very highest character of evi dence vti to whether or not they ire to be believed, or as to whether >r not they are the candidates of my man or set of men, of any fac ion or of any corporation. They are the candidates of the entire people vnd are the candidates named In >pen mass meeting In which all cit izens were Invited to participate ind If elected they will endeavor to oe the mayor and council of all Un people of Brunswick and to admin ister the affairs of the city with views single to the progress and prosperity of Brunswick and without respect to any political faction now existing or width may exist in tin future. THE LIGHT AND WATER COM. PANY. Now that the cde> tlou of mayor and aldermen Is very close at hand, ami the light and water company has developed into an Issue in the campaign for the above offices, It is pertinent that the voters be given a clear and impartial idea of the true status of the situation. The light and water company is uow owned by a party of Individual* with whom the city has had a con tract extending over a term of twen ty years. This contract, has expired, and under Its terms the city has a right to have a iboard of arbitrators named and a value placod ou the property plant and then to buy at a price satisfactory to both parties. The city administration Is finan cially unable to do this at the pres ent time, nor does ft appear that they are either willing or anxious to entertain any proposition on the lino of purchasing tbo plant as was dem oiurt.rutod In flrelr refusal to con sider the resolution offered by Al derman Hoyt W. Oak-, or even to permit a discussion of Uio matter Now If this Indicates a disposition on the part of the mayor and council to have municipal ownership of the light and water coiup&ny we fall to see it, and would sincerely like to have the matter explained. The supporters of Captain W. F. Symons are urging the people to vote for him and bin ticket upon the Idea that the ratee will be low- erod so that they might be charged considerably lees for their light and water. They further urge that the city should own the light and water company. These are both condi tions that the people of Uruuswick heartily favor, as do Colonel C. P. Goody oar and his alderuianlc ticket. Captain taymoiutf adherents have waul flavored Act in Mosul the people of Brunswick Into voting for them by gross misstatements as to Col. Goodyear and his tickets relation to the light aud water company. They would have them believe him aud his aldemiauk ticket to be candi dates of the light and water com pany. What an abtumlly false tin press ton to try and make upou the mtuds of the people for the sake of a greed for polllica! eiuolumonts when Colonel Goodyear and his en tire itlckitt have beer plainly and continually outspoken la favor of municipal ownership of the light aud water uUlttlm*. aud have pledged their bvvii efforts towards this eud. It is plainly and clearly u case of prupogutlug an erroneous Ideu tor Use purpose of furUeirtug the polit ical gain of a fow office seekers. ITace not your faith In the prom Ist** made try office aeekeie to in duce the siricea of your light and water. It is simply a political scheme advanced for the purpose ot securing your vote. They toil you it will be done, but do not sbow you lu what way they will accomplish iL . They cannot reach this adjust ment under the contract between the city aud the light and water com pany. Ask them how they intend bringing abeut this lowering of lutes- You will be put off by soma vague and indefinite answer Blue hrulve of a pteoo iof chicanery evolved by ambitious political office loving men.
