A SUBJECT OF CONGRATULA
TION.
The News sineerly believes that
the initial stops taken on Monday
in the formation of u company com
posed of the most representative bus
iness men of the city, to take over
the lighting plants of the Mutual
Light and Water Company and the
announcement that 'another company
' to bo formed for the purpose of
building and operating a system or
trolley lines lu 'Brunswick, is the
best thing that has happened for the
future growth and progress of this
city in a decade. For years past
there has been strife and contention
over the questions of light and water
and trolley lines. So far reaching
lias been tills disagreement on the
I’ftit of the people and the council
on the oeu side and the other, lull
the subject has been a 'hone of con
tention and an issue in more than
one political contest in Brunswick iu
which acrimony and bitterness was
engendered.
The adjustment of this complex
and perplexing question, at this .par
ticular time, is fortunate for Bruns
wick. In the first place it gives to
the municipality, at an arbitrated
\alue, the entire water plant of the
old company and, if properly admin
istered ought to pay the city’s water
and light bills and still yield a fair
annual revenue to the city exche
quer. It gives to the people of
Brunswick a thoroughly equipped
system of trolley lines and on a
basis as liberal as will be found in
any city of Brunswick’s size iu the
Baited State tints placing rapid tran
sit into our hands at the same time
increasing value ot realty in the city
generally. By its operation the price
of gas, electricity and water will To
served to the people at a cheaper
rate by a large percentage titan has
obtained In the past and cheaper
than Is the case in most oilier cities
in the country save those where
water power is utilized.
It betters conditions In Brunswick
for the further reason that under the
old regime, it was only a question
ot tint© when the city of Brunswick
and the Mutual people would have
seen In the throes of a legal cou
test calculated to cover a period of
tlvo of six years, opening new
wounds and causing more and more
estrangement on the part of the lead
ing business men of the city, retard
ing its growth and progress for a
lack of unity and concerted action
for Its general betterment.
So, with of these facts before
us, we
..Brunswick as u
at Brunswick gaasadtil
on the fact that ques- ]
tlon of ancrthe more|
of such public util
light and water have been
adjusted along and compre
hensive lines as a result of which
both the city and th* 1 citizens will
be the beneficiaries.
The directorate of the new organ
ization Is composed of the very
flower of Brunswick’ss busines men;
men whose very names stand for all
that Is conservative and rinergetlc
in business .affairs, who have made
successes In their own
have the character and the integrity,
the grit and progressiveness that
menus so much to Brunswick.
APPROACHING
ION.
That bond election comes along
Aiv in the course two weeks and
the people of Brunswick and Glynn
generally are going to be
called upon to pass upon the most
Important question of progress which
has been submitted to them In many
years.
Will we issue bonds in the sum of
seventy-five thousand dollars for the
purpose of building anew Glynn
county jail and for for the
handsome new court house%o\v un
der course of construttion or/ill we
have a special tax levy isned for
these purposes? I
These are only the polio® in ihc
case. The county
and several grand rec
ommended these i/ffovenieuls.
They are and if
they do not/come through a bond
issue which fails upon the coming
generation than It will come along
its a special tax levy and the tax
payers of the present will have to
bear the entire burden of these bet
terments.
The News most earnestly endorses
the proposed issue Of bonds and it
hones that the people fo the cuonty
will turn out on election day and
vote for tills splendid move of pro
gress.
In order to carry the bond issue
must receive two-thirds of ih roglsi
feted votes of the county thus ab
sent people, people who have pass
ed away and the natural detlecting
vote, all count against the move
ment.
It is a serious matter and one well
worth the thought and attention of
the people of the community.
