Governor Broward, of Florida Is
ever ready to drain the everglades.
So far Atlanta Is miserable. Shu
lias not managed to claim any con
nection with the Thaw case princi
pals.
The states In the south are all
taking up the subject of lmmlgi a
tion and Georgia is right in line on
the proposition.
The News Is pLeased that Bruns
wick haß a Good Templars' lodge. It
la in keeping with the good tilings
we are now getting.
The people of Brunswick have
evidently learned ere this that thos
“Western Union flashes” do not al
ways "Cash’' the news.
Young Hill, the secretary of Har
rlman who sold the famous Webster
letter, Is now in the tolls. Just
where he ought to be.
AH the present rate of develop
ment Brunswick's taxable values will
increase perhaps a million and a
half this year. Thats a blow at the
pessimists.
The people of Brunswick must
1 arn to pull together and make It
bard for the obstructionist when he
arises to stand In the way of sug
gested Improvements or 'betterments.
THE ERROR OF EDITOR GRAVES
The Waycrosa Journal, like a great
fajoilty of ,the democratic newspa
pers in Georgia, Is protesting
against the suggestion made at the
recent banquet in Chattanooga lasi
week by Editor John Temple Gr.
ves to the effect that Mr. Bray&n
nominate Roosevelt as the demo
cratic candidate next year.
In discussing the matter the Jour
nal very wisely Bays:
“The speech of Hon. John Tem
ple Graves at the Bryan banquet,
was a surprise to his admirers and
friends throughout the state.
“It is to be regretted that M
Graves considered It his bounden
duty to advise Mr. Ilryan to nomi
nate Mr. liopßevelt as the democrat
ic candidate for president, that ho
did not select some other time and
pla. than a banquet given on Mr.
Bryan’s birthday, at which he was
the guest of honor. Mr. Brvan was
in Chattanooga as a guest and since
he Is regarded as the logical leader
of the democratic party, Mr. Graves
erratic advice was little short of an
Insult to the great commoner who
stands at the head of his party.
Mr. Graves was also lacking in
■ sound Judgment and au accurate
knowledge of the people of his state
then he aald he believed the sur-
Bating Mr. Roosevelt mb their can
didate for tire presidency that he
was speaking for a majority of the
'fleopte* of--*fce^3is#!Tr 'State of the

Snajority of them, belong to the dem-
party and rannot stand for
the Cjethoda adopted by Mr. Roose

was known of all men that bis cam
paign expenses were paid by liberal

IMIV^G TO THE SOUTH
The folio editorial Is
from the esteenl?d> Mitiutaciureljß
Record: I
"With the enmunous etxportalion
of merchandise Jtom southern ports
Is ought to feasible to se
cure the esuFiiishmem of a line
of ImmlgjfTOon boats nof simply to
one blit to a half dozen ports.
An// It would take a half dozen
lines to make any Impression In sup
plyis_ the great need for enlarged
population In the nouthl Every
southern port able to supply outward
cargoes should undertake tie devel
opment of regular lines of steam
ers and out of this competition will
come the survival of the attest,
whether It be due to natural a lvan
tages or to thd activity and hustle
of the people back of the enterprise.
It Is not of course to be expected that
the people of the different states
are going to concentrate their ener
gies upon any one line of steam
ers or any one port. It a
mistake If they did so.
scarcely be possible for
southern port to secure business
sufthient to Justify more than two!
regular steamships a month, and at
best they could not be expected to
handle more than EOO to 1,000 Im
migrants each. Put It at 1,000 and
this would give 2,000 a month or
24,000 a year. This would scarce
ly be a drop In the bucket. Any one
southern state could absorb two or
three times that many foreigners
every year for the next five years.
"Closely connected with the ques
tton of scarcity of labor must be the
development of Improved machinery
and equipment in oedor to do by
machinery wuat we are now doing
iby hand power. In the iron regions
of Alabama under the old system ot
tilling furnaces with coke and ore
and limestone, twenty-flve to thirty
men were needed at each furua i
to do the work than can now oe
done at some furnaces by three men.
i.abor saving machinery is now do
ing the work and the other twenty
four or twenty-live men are 1 being
utilized for other things. This ay
tem, however, does not prevail at
the southern furnaces. It only Indi
cates one of the ways In which ti
iron as well as In other lines of
work, labor saving machinery must
be utilized.”
