LONGWORTH NEEDS COACHING
The Hon. L mgworth is
pepMps the best known son In law
to America. He means well but his
distinguished father-in-law should
coacH him on American history. Mr.
Longworth recently declared that
Ohio more than any other state Is
known as “the mother of presidents"
The historians of the United State*
disagree with him. Virginia . bears
that title, and no other state
share the distinction with the Old
Dominion. Take the facts. Of the
twenty-five president five were born
In Ohio and four wer# residents of
Ohio when they - became president.
Ohions o- cupied the office of chief
executive a little over eight years,
Virginians
years, nearly aJKih'd of -the life of
the republic
Look at the character, ability pud
records of the men from the two
states who have been president.
William H. Harrison was born In
Virginia, but was a resdent of Ohio
when he became president. He was
in office a year and was one of the
weakest men who ever filled the
office. The next Ohioan who became
president was U. 8. Grant, born In
Ohio but a resident of the District
of Columbia elected, who over
powered the Confederates at Appa
mattox with an loverwhelming army
and resources tMat more than ten
times outnumbered them. Then
came Ruther tojM B. Hayes, who was
unlawfully umrightoualy declared
Samuel B. Tilden,
who elected, and who did little
the office. He was follow
er hy James A. Garfield, who served
a while and ac ompllshed Ut
ile before he was assassinated Ben
jamin Harrison v/as little of a
statesman, was known the country
uver as “The Baby” with a hat too
large for him. William McKinley
was a patriot.
Glance at the Virginians who oc
cupied ,the brillte house* GCorge
Washington was the Father of als
Country. Thomas Jefferson wrote
hi* declaration of independence,
James Madison was tihe father of 1
the constitution; John Tyler was an
orator, a statesman and a patriot;
Zavhary Taylor, wbo was iborn In
Virginia, was a great soldier, and the
hero of the Mexican war.
Son-In-Law Longworth should brush
up on American history.
