School Commissioner Merritt has
Issued a valuable and Instructive
pamphlet on school work and school
condltons in rural districts.
President Roosevelt Is ''touched'
over the compliment of Georgia erect
lng a faclmlle of the old Bulloch
residence. Keep It until the Fourth
of July and then touch It oft In liouoi
of his old friend, booaer T.
Was tue board of county com mis
sloners handed a "lemon" or did the
people hand themselves a "lemon"?
Wo are very much of the opinion
that our county people did It to them
selves, but they should see that it
la not squeezed before they are
handed a box of the fruit by the
tax collector. Give us another bond
election.
Tills is an open question: Which
would you rather have for our next
president Roosevelt, Bryan or John
Temple Graves. John Temple
Graves don't Know what party he
adovcntes. But Col. William Henry
Watterson makes an Interesting
stroke by saying the democrats may
win If cholera should break out to
the Philippines, yellow fever in Cuba
and corn should go to ten cents a
bushel and wheat to forty cents. It
all this is to happen let the republi
cans keep It. Democrats don’t cart
to wiu on a famine platform.
THE VISIT OF DIRECTOR BET
JIMAN.
The visit of J. A. Betjiman, chair
man, of the board of directors of the
Georg a Immigration society -to Buns
wick yesterday means considerable
to Brunswick and this section of the
state generally. As we have argue!
from time to time, there is no moil
Important subject before the people
of the south today than that of im
migration and Mr. Betjiman Is en
gaged in the great work of thorough
ly organizing the society in Georgia,
lie proposes to perfect au organiza
tion in every county in the state as
well as In all the militia districts.
. He was met by a great many of
the local business men yesterday and
was assured of cordial support by all
of them.
The people of Brunswick are thor
oughly alive to the need of this great
movement, for they are badly haudl
capped In the matter of labor con
ditions obtaining here. In fact, the
trouble is getting to be general over
the south and we have come to be
lieve that it is the only correct solu
tlon to be found iu the subject oi im
migration.
Mr. Betjlman was euoouraged with
the situation iu Brunswick and will
return at a later day, when a local
Wganlzatlon will be perfected.
RAy_ROAD BORROWING.
President Finley, of the Southern,
pleads that the be so construct
ed the railroads can borrow
for extensions and improve-
TOentsT"and he puts It in'shape of
a plea tdi the people to allow It.
All right. The roads have now the
right to borrow all they can get peo
ple to let. But President Finley
does not seem to comprehend that
his appeal to the pe m involves
their becoming tho backers and final
payers of the notes the railroads
make. While it is not completely
and frankly exposed In his remarks
H Is implied that h<? wants roads
unrestrained as to what prices they
will charge fo rtheir sevices.
Tills condition, ho thinks, would
enable the oads to borflow more free
ly—which is true. But it
also Includes the JX.\ that by sub
mitting t oany (barges that the rail
roads see fit, to make the people
become the endorsers of the obliga
tion and finally pay It. There is
nothing in the history of railroad
management to encourage the hope
that the borrowed money would be
strictly applied to the purposes
pleaded. Much of it might go the
payment of the securities already
managed among the managing men
(till thelo and thus
resolve Itself into nL mere pocketing
of profits by tiie establishing of a
new debt. 1
SMALL INDtTRIES.
The geatest to all cites
are small ItujCfrles. Yesterday,;

ready well established popular brand
of the canned oyster products.
it is those small industries that
have built up all cities. Atlanta Is
perhaps one of the leading Inland
cities to receive the greatest bene
tit from small manufacturing entor
priises. Away back in 1888 Henry
VV. Grady, Hugh and Sam Inman.
Senator Will Venable, John Silvey,
Henry Beltrman.'Bvan P. Howell and
other old time Atlantalns, advocated
small industries and the business
men united to have the secretary of
he board of trade secure such enter
prises and to give every Inducement
for their location in Atlanta and the
plan was carried out and Atlanta
went ahead with a rush. Now see
where she Is today. Claims and just
ly claims to be the gateway to the
south. Brunswick can go ahead on
the same lines.
Encourage small lndutrles.
The Atlanta, Birmingham and At.
lanllc railroad is going to offer prize
money for the three legist melons
gown along the line. The prizes wilt
bo paid to growmrs only. Now if
thee was to be a melon eating eon
test we would have ft dollar at least
our hoy.
