The new sidewalk ordinance i

progress of the right sort.

It is said the Sultan of Turkey has
captured Ralfeoulfs cook. If he has
the bandit is at his mercy.
The local organization of the ltn

Watch Brunswick girow! All of

ROOSEVELT'B NEW ROLE.
President Roosevelt Is said to be
taking an active part In the strugf
gie In New York between Governor
Hughes and the old party machine
allied against him, He has given it
out that all federal office holders who
ar opposing Huglu>s will have to go
'because in Ills opinion they are trait
ors to good govarnmemt—therefore
pernicious and should be removed
fiom office.
From some points of view thins ae
tlvity of the president is at a vor
lauee with the principles of civil
service, and it must be admitted that
it would be better If the chief exe
culhe would not dabble In the lit
tleness of partisan politics.
Still It adds Interest to tho skir
mish and lends a picturesque fealure
to the combat. At the same time It
helps Hughes, who seems to need
assistance, as do all men who under
take to fight republican evils.
Now. had the president removed
pernicious officeholders for reasons of
their Inefficiency or corruption or ne
gleet, the spectable would have been
more inspiring. But we fear his
tactics will In the minds of many
people mark him as a mere politic
ian of the common brand, asleep to
the errors of a man holding a place
under him till man disregards
his personal or political wishes. Ta
ken altogether, the New York lnct
iftrat does not add to the structure
of Roosevelt as a statesman or exag
gerate his devotion to real patriot
ism. He wants his way more
h* wants the nobler things. v

Vhe south is advertising.
The idea of gettingnumerous
southern cities before
the of the world Is taking
root all over the south.
In SavanAii a sum to the amount
of $15,000 has been raised for the
purpose of setting forth the natural
advantages of that city In meat and
attractive book form, the citytapun-
V -
ell having, with commendable enter
prise, appropriated $5,000 of this
amount. The citizens and business
men bought space for the additional
sum and thus the publishers are ena
bled to present a creditable work.
In Columbus a similiar movement
Is on foot, and like Savannah, the
council of that city went down into
its exchequer and wadb handsome
appropriations tor the mo rk. Lynch
burg, Virginia is a diffusing In the
same manner, Tmapa, and, In
fact, the whole southern section is
aroused to the Idea of placing, In an
attractive manner, pen pictures of
their country before the eyes of the
world.
The Brunswick Harbor Magazine is
filling this bill in Brunswick. The
publication will be the most for
reaching of the kind ever attempted
in this section of the state. It will
deal wlllo Brunswfck from every
viewpoint and will ftov the capital

fold advantages we Assess.
Just at this Ume, When the trend
of development is Jouthward it is
right that this of the country

The man to invest, who
is seekitoga new home, wants to
know SOTiiething of that home, of its
climate, its schools, its churches Its
water sifiply and of the thousand llt
the things that go to make a charm
ing place of residence. The Harbor
Magazine will show all of these
things. The publication is worthy
of the support of the people of Bruns
wick, individually and eoH'ctiveiy,
and The News expresses deep appre
ciation for the support .thus far ten
dered and for that which Is to come
It is said that Mir. Hardman is
in favor of a law forbidding cam

and particularly practical railroad
men.
Alderman Mann wants to take
down all of the telegraph poles on
Monk stieet. Is the alderman In con

The public landing at the foot of
Gloucester street that was faltered
by Alderman Wright is one of the
best motions that have been adopted
in a long time.
Employes of railroads are objei ting

the condition of affairs when such

Brunswick is greatly In need of

that could happen to the city.
