GPENINCTOF THE EXPOSITION
exposition w,.s
foiwuly opened Friday with iuU r
etflng ceremonies including an ad
dress by President Roosevelt, whose
picfttiice with that of a number or
government officials was a Striking

The exposition will be continued
until the latter part of November,
rt is unique in a number of vesper ts.
It is held iu celebration of the three

Jamestown was founded ill May
1607, by a small company under Capt.
Newport. It Is on the ■< auk* of ihe
Janies river about thirty-two miles
from its mouth. It was here in IblD

In America was held, and It was
here In the same year that slavery
was Introduced in the original
thirteen colonies. In September,
lG7ti, the town was almost complete
ly destroyed by Nathaniel Bacon lu
what is known as ‘ Bacon's Rebel
lion." Up to 1698, when it was sup
planted by Williamsburg, it was the
capital of Virginia. The site of the
seuh'i&ent, which w-as originally a
peninsular, but is now an island, is
owned by the Association for the
Preservation of Virginia Antiquities.
Nothing remains there but the ruins
of the church which was built
sometime between 1075 and 1685, a
portion of a fort and two or three
houses.
The exposition is being held about
six or eight miles out of Norfolk, on
Hampton Roads, one of the most
beautiful sheets of water, aud one
of the most historic localities in
America. The country all around
is closely identified with American
history and this of coufcse, makes
the exposition of more tlngi usual
interest A mighty convocation of
fighting men and floating war ma
chines for a distinctive feature in
the celebration of the event. from
which the great American nation has
grown. At t'ne exposition history
will be exploited from 1607 to the
present time. The exhibits are of
the highest degree of interest ami
and instruction, a fact that is assur
ed by the cooperation of some of the
noted authorities along princi
pal line of scientific education and
endeavor. The industrial features
were congregated with great care
and under the diection of men fam
ous in their various branches.
The question of is
one that should be looked into care
fully by the citizens of Glynn. The
