This is One of the Most Important
Matters to Come up Recently
An Examination Has
Been Made.
A splendid move was made last
lnglu for a complete system of sui
face drainage In Brunswick. As is
well known, the city is practically
without such a system at preseut anu
heavy rainfalls or excessive tide,
easily flood a large area of both bus
ineSs and residential sections of the
city, in this connection the commit
tee on public works, with genuine
wisdom, have had Assistant Engiiicti
J. D. Hops, of Savannah, here foi
several days consulting with Engl

to meet this badly needed improve

Both engineers, liigs and Kops sab

to the council last, night, ilr. High
report, which was verbal, shows tun
since coming to Brunswicu hi l a.,
prepared a thorough topographa,
map .of the populated sections o,
the city, showing in all about 7,inn.
elevations. He suggests the- need oi
three more immense drama in lhe
city, one to extend down Howe street
to iciire the present one in use on
that thoroughfare, a second one t
extend out Mansfield street and <
third to be a thorough reeonstru t

Mr. High thinks, will give a p.
outlet and will prevent the <a
ponds and stagnations lb a f-> i >v.

Engineer Kops here submit U

ommended some plan for reil ug
low areas in the city and far lit 1 - s
si brm lit of new grade Hum .n •
for tilling in low vacant lots.
The Council was deeply into; -<!
iri the report of these two ofli s is,
and in fact Alderman Tupper and ' vi
ed that it was the most im. < : u
proposition since his member u -u
t. e aldermanic board.
A motion prevailed that Giiy n

system and that the entire ilia i r be

works with power to act.

Two Trips to Island Sunday
The steamer Hessie will make tv,

An increase in laWble values In

The report was a thoroughly com

decrease over the figures of the tax
assessors in the matter of personal
property’, the item is handsomely off
setted by a splendid increase in reai
estate, the recapitulation showing a
net increase over the tax assessors'
report $186,915.
.This increase, added tg the $2,1'6,
