LARGE CROWD SEE
THE CUWSMJUt
COMPANY PRESENTING THE
PLAY A STRONG ONE—LAST
TIME IN THE SOUTH.
A larg euaditnee greeted the in
duction of "The Clansman,” at m
Grand last night. This story of Thus.
Dixon, dealing with an unfortunate
era. in the history of the south, U
in the hands of a very good company
who produce the story in all of \M,
rough edge,; to pretty fair udvantdjSjK
The fact of the matter Is that tflg
hook should have never been writ
ten, and certainly never dramatized.
Its author has only delved into the
coarser and more horrible side Of
the. awful days of the reconstruction
period in the southern states, without
fainting the best view of the picture.
The play cannot cor.cct the evils of
the past, nor can it produce any bet
ter sentiment among the two races
in this country and especially in this
socion of It.
it is announced thut the present
tour of "The Clansan” in this coun
try Is its last one —that it is going to
Kuropo to show the people of the old
world a condition with which their
b others on this side had to Con
tend. it is a good thing and cer
tainly in that land will not have Gut
prejudices to play to as Is the case*
here.
The company presenting the story
last night, us stated above, Is a good
one arid for that reason the objection
able features of the play are more
strongly brought out.
The playe.s were alright, but th/
story, that generates race hatred,
that lias been touched cniy in liagrant
prejudiced places, that’s another
thing. .
