COMMISSION 10
AID ID FIGHT

THE RAILROAL COMMISSION
WILL FIGHT AGAINST THE
INCREASED RATES.
Tbe Georgia railroad commission
will lend the weight of its influence
to a protest before the interstate
commerce commission against increas
ed freight rates from Ohio river points
and Special Attorney Hines has been
ordered to present the matter to the
interstate body. It will be recalled
that on the 10th of July a committee
from the Manufacturers’ and Mer
chants’ association of Rome appeared
before the Georgia commission ttrg ng
them to take this action.
At that time it did not seem that
the state commission would take the
matter up. A similar case, said the
commissioners, was even then before
the interstate commission, from pri
vate sources, and they preferred to
await, the outcome of this case.
But after reflection the Georgia com
missioners on Thursday unanimously
decided to protest the increase. They
are thus taking the action which the
Rome delegation from the M. and M.
association urged. The Rome associ
ation was the only one in the state
to take the matter up, and the out
come will be awaited with interest by
local people.
“There Is no way of knowing detl
nltely, blit it Is estimated that, the
Increased rates on the four classes
mentioned will approximate annually
from $750,000 to $1,000,000 In Georgia
alone. The rate on class P which
applies to flour lias been raised .04
cents per barrel, flu sea B, C and
II apply to grain, hay and pocking
house products and the Increase upon
those commodities to Georgia points
aggregates .02 cents per hundred
pounds.
