Columbus, Oa., June 10.—The Geor
gia and Alatama Indust: ial Index says
in its regular weekly issue:
“Analysis of the construction new.,
fci the fast week In Georgia and Ala
bama shows that in no branch of im
provement is greater progress being
made than in the erection of modern
school buildings. At Thonraston, Ga..
contract for a $30,000 school building
was awarded, A meric us, Ga., has had
plans prepared for two buildings and
the remodeling of a present structure
on an extensive scale, Birmingham.
Aia., is inviting proposals for several
pieces of schoolhouse construction
work. Jonesboro, Ala,, is Inviting
bids for erecting a school building.
Eiberton, Ga., is Inviting similar pro
posals. Bremen, Oa., has called an
elec*ion-on the subject of school bonds
and NichoJls, Ga.. and Cave Springs,
Ga., will both erect school buildings,
and plans for new buildings have been'
prepared for Tinsley, Ala., and Fair-1
view, Ala.
"College Park, Ga., will probably
vote on the. issuance of sewer and
waterworks bonds. At Jacksonville,
Ala., waterworks bonds were voted.
The establishment of waterworks ami
lighting system is being agitated in
various towns through the two states.
"A $200,000 docks company was
formed at Mobile, Ala., and will
make extensive improvements.
“Twenty new corporations were
formed during the week, with mini
mum capital stock of $1,041,500. There
Is a strong probability that a yarn
mill will Le established at Athens,
Ga., anil at Floral,t, Ala., a mass
meeting was held iu Hie interest of a
proposed cotton mil}.
“A company in the Birmingham dis
trict that is now mining 800,000 tons
of coal annually will double its capa
city. A colonial column plant is to
lie established at Forence, Ala. At
Vnion City, Ga., a SIOO,OOO gas and
oil company lias been incorporated.
Birmingham, Ala., Is to have a $125,-
000 cold storage plant. Xevv hosjpitalfi

are reported for Griffin. Ga., Birm
ingham, Ala., and Savannah, Ga. Tax

bama, increased $1,250,000 during the

FORMER COLLECTOR OF CUSTOMS

KNOWN NEGRO IN STATE.
The following from yesterday's Sa
vannah News will be of interest in
[this city:
"Col. John H. Deveaux, col leer or of
l the port of Savannah, and on ■ ; l tl,e

at his home here last night. He had

"When the yellow fever ep'demic of
1876 was raging in Savannah D -veaux
and two other clerks remained with
the collector at his post, the otiu r

died and the collector and the other
clerks were stricken, leaving Deveaux'
the only official on duty. L kept j
the customs house open and single
handed attended to the entering and
clearing of vessels, keeping the com
merce of Lie port unbroken. The day
the collector returned to his dealt
Deveaux was stricken with the fever
"Colonel Deveaux resigned his po
sition under President Cleveland's ad
ministration. In 1889 President Har
risen appointed him collector at
Brunswick. Four years later an epi
demic of yellow fever broke out there
I and again Deveaux remained at his
post and faithfully disbursed a large
sum of money to the afflicted people
of Brunswick under the direction of
the treasury department. At the ex
piration of his term, Mr. Cleveland
j was again president and Deveaux re
signed.
"President MiKinley appointed him
collector ar Savannah in 1898. He was
reappointed by President. Roosevelt in
1902, and though tits term expired

yet been named.
“Colonel Deveaux was an officer ot
the Georgia Mate troops, colored, rot
twenty-one years, and was in com
mand of the lirsf battalion man.
