to keep Thomas from holding any

Harriet Beecher Stowe's son says
she wrote "Uncle Tom's Cabin" from

Teddy must surely be in darkest

All of the bucket shops in Ohio are

In all of the gieatness of the Uni

that the tobacco trust controls ?0 per

Another prophet has ecine along and

Georgia the hide of the a’.l’gator is
harder.
’’Most temperance orators,' observe ?

Tfce people of Mclntosh and of
Glynn counties need to study up care
fully the plan of the proposed good
road connecting the two cities and af
fording both of them a great highway
of iraffle and better railroad facili
ties at one and the same time. It’s
a great big proposition and one worthy
of the support of all real progressive
citizens, k ,; >L MB
THE GLYNN-M’INTO&H PROPOSI
TION.
Now that the Glynn county commis •
sioners have been down to Darien and
have held a joint seftion with the
commissioners of Mclntosh county on
the proposed movement for good roads
and the A., B. & A. extension, it is
time for our people to begin a cam
paign of education on the subject. It
is safe to estimate that not one-third
of the people of these two counties
really realize the magnitude of the
proposd movement. They are inclined
to look upon it as a purely local prop
osition. They do not seem to catch
the idea that the road in question
would place both of these cities on a
great roadway from the north to Flor
ida. They have the idea in their
heads that it’s an automobile project,
that those who own these modern
machines are seeking playgrounds for
pastime.
How ridiculous!
The building of this road would
mean to Darien and to Brunswick that
both of them would become stations
on a great highway of travel, extend
ing from Florida on the south to
New York on the east. It would make
both of these cities intermediate
points on this splendid trunk line and
in addition it would make both of
them markets for hundreds of farm
ers and others in this section, who
would seek their merchants for busi
ness.
It would bring anew railroad to
Brunswick and It would largely in
crease flic capacity and the worth of
the only line now entering Darien
It would serve to Increase taxable
values in both counties for the simple
reason that it would bring them in
closer touch with the ldrger marts
of trade of this section.
In short, it is a mammoth indus
trial movement, having at its back
the best business 'bought of the
south and the east. It "hi make cit
ies of waste places and its value is
almost inestimable.
We must nil get to work and show
the people the real worth In the plat,
and when they have come to under
stand it, they will as progressive peo
ple ratify it at the polls.
THE GLYNN ACADEMY ALUMNI
ASSOCIATION.
The News is pleased to note that
the graduates of the Glynn academy
are considering the plan of organ’z
ing permanently an alumni associa
fion. The Glynn academy has beet
the leading educational institution ii
this city for many years and anionf
her graduates are some of the bright
est men and women in the state o
Georgia. She has contributed to tin
higher arts, to the professions and to
the business circles of the state. In
eluded among hc> alumni are member*
of the judiciary, mayors of cities, edi
tors, pastors and others who have
attained to the very highest pinnacle
in the affairs of the state and the na
tion. Some of her ■sons have strayed
beyond the portals of the state and
have written their names high up in
the records of their new homes.
Some have passed into the Great
Beyond and have been garnered into
the store-house of the Master; others
in the sear and yellow leaf of life,
have passed into the twilight land and
are awaiting the final summons.
In any event, ail of those whom the
Reaper has spared will derive some
pleasure from the formation of this
association and we shall welcome its
coming.
The press and the press agencies
are making a fuss over the announce
ment that Mrs. William Annis, former
wife of the victim of the pistol of
Captain Hains, is to wed again. Well
that's her business.
Rome is arranging to have a regatta
on July Fourth. Now that's about
the biggest joke we have heard of
since John Temple tan for vice-presi
dent. Is the regrtta to be hold in th
little artificial lake at DeSoto park?
That plumbing oidinanee passed by
the city council last night was a good
move and comes in the nature of a
long-neglected improvement. The
plumoing of a city has to do with its
public health and should always b'
the subject of careful consideration.
In the death of John H. Deveaux,
the colored Collector of the.port of

, passing away and he leaves to his
memory a good heritage in the shape
of a splendid reputation for integrity.

THINGS LOOK GOOD.
Conditions of business the country
over are quite favorable to a contin
uance of the process of recuperation
Prices of securities are on the aver
age rising in response to an increas
ing dividend return or prospect of it.
Extensive improvements in the
tracks and terminals of railroads are
responded to by an advance in the
price of the stock, because the outlay
is taken as an indication of bigger
earnings in the future. The impulse
given to the steel and car building
industries by the renewed animation
of railroad? has sent men to work in
the mills and factories in large num
bers, as well as lifted the prices of
the securities of the trust to where
it Las engaged virtually to maintain
its common stock as a dividend payer
?.t 4 per cent.
Notwithstanding the co . men <:y
'hat business would wait and is wait
ing on th? settlement of the tariff
quertion and the atijournmept of con
re. :? the careful observer notes tha'
business is steadily picking up while
congress is yet in session aril the ex
act tariff figures are as yet not fixed
The crops for the year are in fair
condition, and the prospects f v traf
fie are bright. There are local com
plaints of depression here and there,
tut the country generally teems to
have largely recovered from the
shrinkage and to be main airr'ng the
gain.

Another Operation Avoided.
Adrian, Ga. —“I suffered untold
misery from female troubles, and my
doctor said an operation was my only
chance, and I dreaded it almost as
much as death. Lydia E. Pinkham’e
Vegetable Compound completely cured
me without an operation.” Lena V.

Thirty years of unparalleled suc

Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound to
cure female diseases. The great vol

Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Com
