For a blind man. Senator Gore can
see more remarkable tlings in th>
senate than many of the senators with
good optics.
The office of collector of customs of

Hooker Washington’s remarks about
the victory of Johnson, the negro slug

many good men in all sections ol the
country.
The Augusta Herald is worrying it

here in Brunswick we are pestered
because' the mint beds, etc, etc-., are
so scarce.
In tbe death of Edward Everett

another shining mark, removing a
landmark of the olden times.
They found, so it is stated five

A DESERVED MONUMENT
* There is no question about the pro
priety of the erection of the monu
ment to Stephen D. Lee, which was
unveiled at Vicksburg yesterday. Lee
was the youngest of the lieutenant
generals of the late confederacy. He
was a brilliant Chnxrnander, a brave
fighter, a keen and shrewd operator
on the field of battle. He personally
combined the virtue which men de
light to honor, and he was in every
way a model man In peace as well as
in war.
When the civil war ended he en
tered business took up the duties
of civil life fn a quiet manner, in
keeping with his character. He was
placed at the head of the leading
school for young men in Mississippi
and discharged his duties with great
efficiency. He was always for peace
ful settlement of sectional differences,
the healing of old wounds and the ut
most harmony. His example and
teachings were valuable to the young
men who -were committed to his
charge. And it may be profitably no
ted that from the north comes no note
of dissent from the movement which
placed a monr.rm'ht to Lee 1 * memory

AN INJUDICIOUS EXPRESSION.
It was a woman who, at the confed
erate reunion at Memphis the other
day made the passionate declaration
that "we have lived as rebels, we
are still rebels and we will die as
rebels, it is hard to be patient with
this kind of folly, notwithstanding
spoken by a thoughtless and impul
sive woman. Asa matter of practical
fact we ceased to be rebels and to
live as rebels during a momentous
April forty-four years ago. Since that
time the sober, sane, sensible mm
of ilie south have honestly and fully
and intelligently accepted the dictum
of force and fate and have lived as
becomes men who accept an adverse
arbitration.
Such hysterical exclamation as
that of ihe foolish and impetuous wo
man at Memphis will lie pa neled ail
over the north as evidence of an ir
reconcilable south. It will he rolled
under the tongues of the comparative
ly few southern baiters as a sweet
morsel, and it may do us harm as a
section. The treacle of Taft and the
vinegar of the unreconstructed are
alike unacceptable to the reflective
people on both sides of the line, Let
u i hope tliis incident will soon be for
gotten by all. and especially by the
people of Ihe section whom it so gross-
Jy misrepresented. if it should by any
unhappy chance be true, then the

and prosperity of the south since the
civil war is a He and a cheat.

The confederate veterans, paying
marked honors to the son of U. S. j
