LEGISUTIE TO
CONVEIIE TODAY
rr- ___
JOHN HOLDER WILL BE ELECTED
SPEAKER AND JOHN BOI
| FEUILLET, CLERK.
Atlanta, Ga., June 22.—0n the eve
of the convening of the legUlature
members of both the upper and lower
houses are arranging here. Many
rooms at the Piedmont, Kimball anil
Aragon have been engaged for those
who are counting on more than their
four per from the state to get along
on while others have engaged board
at cheaper and less pretentious places.
i Although there are many familiar
faces to be seen in the lobby of the
Kimball, there are many members who
are either serving their first terms or
who have not been here as represen
tatives in some years. Several of the
loaders are already here; and those
with pet measures to get through are
busy mixing with the lesser lights
as they arrive.
The two houses will convene on
Wednesday, but for several days
there will be little business transact
ed. Little Interest is being mani
fested in the election of president of
the senate and speaker of the house.
John M. Slaton, of Atlanta, elected at
the last election from this district,
will be the presiding officer of that
body. He has no opposition.
Allhough some of position has been
apparent to John N. Holder of Jack
sen, for the speakership of the bouse,
It is generally conceded that lie will
te elected. Roland Ellis, of Bibb, was
counted on p.s beirg a prominent fig
ure iu the race, but It was announced
a few days ago that Mr. Ellis had
retired in favor of Mr. Holder, so
that his election Is assured. He Is
one of the best-known and .one of
the most popular men in the house.
His record Is a long and good one and
he is R parliamentarian of ability.
In the senate Charles S’. Northeu
will, as usual, be elected secretary of
that body, and genial John T. Bol
feulllot will lie elected clerk of the
bouse. So well have these two offi
cers attended to their duties ami so
popular are they that they are count
ed as fixtures.
On the day after the legislature con
venes the- last message of Governor
Smith will I t- read and there is every
Indication that it will be an interest
ing communication. The governor has
several important matters that he will
cal) to the attention of the two bodies
and these matters will be handled in
the governor’s vigorous and charac
teristic manner.

GOVERNOR SMITH GIVES YOUNG
MURRAY COUNTY BOY HIS
FREEDOM.
Atlanta, June 22.—John Biassin
ga;ne gets a pardon. Governor Smith
will sign, on Monday, the gold-seal
ed document, which the young Mur
ray county boy will hold in his hand
as he walks forth to freedom from
the bars that have held him and the
stripes that he has worn for six years
past.
But John Blassingame gets more
than freedom. For him freedom
means that he may now marry the
faithful girl of the mountains who
has been waiting for him all these
years, though she waited against hope
and though her affianced was in
prison to serve till death claimed him.
Biassingame, still a very young man,
was convicted in Murray county, up
in the north Georgia mountains, of
killing his rival. He was sentenced
to life imprisonment, for mu:der. That
was six years ago, while he was a
raw youth not yet twenty. The girl
whom he and the man he killed had
loved, declared that she would wait
fo r him all her life and longer if
necessary.
Blassingame, since April 1, when
the new convict law became effective,
has been working on the roads of
Fulton county.
Time and again has the petition for
Blassingame'* release been declined.
Thf- prison commission d<-cl'ned to
consider it some three years ago. It
stayed on file. Activity among the
petitioners was renewed. Finally tin
commission recommended his parole.
That was a few months ago. Gover
nor Smith declined the recommend.* -
tion. B’assinganic had not served the
minimum sentence as the law requir
ed. The commission recommend i
that Ids sentence be commuted. Gov
