STRONG APPEAL FOR
SINGLE SESSIONS
Another Prominent Brunswick
Mother Urges School Heads
to Return to the System of
the Fathers.
Editor News: I heartily concur in
the opinion of the who wrote
the communication in The News of
Tuesday morning, anent the question
of single or double sessions of school.
It is a fact thta practically the en
tire day is spent at school by the child
under the present system. As I write
at 4:35 my children are just getting
in from school and during the winter
months only a short time remains of
daylight after this hour.
Aside from the very important truth
of the long (in many cases) walk
home at noon, the eating hastily of a
heavy meal, the return walk to school,
with the brain inactive, and body fa
tigued, only to save a half hpur, the
child has absolutely no time for mu
sic lessons of any kind or description,
or scarcely any recreation even, be
side the time required for home work;
And to add to the toil of the trudge
to and from school-at noon, through
heat, cold and rain, the new physical
exercises are given just before the
dinner hour, which In my huirfble
opinion, should be given earlier in
the morning, when the child is fresh
and alert. - ~
It is true that study periods are
provided, but a vast percentage of
the pupils fail to conscientiously take
advantage of them, thinking he will
study at home, and often doing no
studying at either place.
With the single session, the morn
ing hours are about the same, with a
half or three quarters hour recess, for
a light luncheon at noon, and back
home by at least 2:00 or 2:30 o’clock,
with time for music and recreation.
And there would he better prepared
lessons, with the knowledge that they
must be gotten only at home.
It Is the duty of the Board of Edu
cation to look well Into the merits gf
this question, and really consider white
is best for the greatest number Of
children attending school,
