morning at Id o’clock, with Judge
'Butts presiding, and the following
cases were disposed of during the
day:

Dismissed at plaintiff’s cost.

MRS. A. E. LONG, DOUGLAS,
UNDERGOES OPERATION
A successful operation for appendi
citis was performed at the hospital
last night by Doctors Blanton and
Dunwir.dy, on Mrs. A. E. Long, of
Douglas, who was bruughfc berip.in a
serious condition by her son, J F.
Long, of the fire department. Mrs.
Long is also the mother of County
Officer Long.
While the operation was a serious
one, it was reported late last night
that the patient was resting easy and
holding her own - exceedingly well.

Chicago Authorities Determined
to Rid City of Officers Who
Have Been in Bootlegging
Business For Many Months.
Chicago, Sept. 26. —A police cap
tain, twenty-five patrolmen and twen
ty saloon keepers from one South
Side precinct were called before Unit
ed states Listrict Attorney Cylne to
day in connection with alleged whis
key ‘‘shake downs” uncovered by the
arrest last week of three police ser
geants.
The move against liquor law viola
tors in the police department was
proceeding today from three angles,
Chief Charles Fitzmorris, who Satur
day night .charged 250 police are boot
leggers and law violators, and who
transferred 800 'officers and men in
one shake up order, was continuing
his investigation today.
District Attorney Glyne promised
federal assistance in ridding the de
partment of law violators.
Harry L. Brin, assistant district at
torney, who is conducting the inves
tigation for Mr. Clyne, announced to
day he had learned policemen involv
ed in the liquor scandal were raising
a huge defense tpn.d in the depart
ment and had hired p number of
prominent lawyers.
DR. BELCHER ENTERS
PLEA OF NOT GUILTY
Clearwater, Fla., Sept. 26. —Dr. I. J.
Belcher, physlcial of Tarpan Springs,
entered a formal plea'of not guilty to
day when his cpke Was called in cir
cuit court for trial. Dr. Belcher is
charged with manslaughter 1n connec
tion with the death of Miss Virginia
Turner, 21, of this city, whose body
was found late last month in Brook
er Creek near here. The coroner s
jury held that death resulted from an
alleged operation.
Judge C. O. Andrews, of Orlando,
assigned by Governor Hardee to try
the case because of the disqualifica
tion of Judge M; A. McMullen, who is
distantly related to both Dr. Belcher
andV Miss Turner, ordered the sheriff
to slum man a ( venire of 35 men for the
jury and recessed court until 9:30
o’clock tomorrow morning.
