Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atone
ment, which is observed by Jews
throughout the world on the 10th day
of the Hebrew Month of Tishri, and
fx : f.
which occurs this year on Wednes
day, October 12th, will be observed
in Brunswick by appropriate services.
Yom Kippyr i$ the mausoleum day
of the Jewish calendar. So Inviola
ble was held the sanctity of this day
in ancient times, and even today, that
on this occasion the Jew puts every
thing aside, and turns to prayer for
the forgiveness of all his transgres
ses. History has recorded no great
er instance of solemn nature, to the
Jew, than the “Yom Adin.” On this
day the Jew refrains from partaking
of all food and dring, in order to
humble himself before his God. and
to realize how dependent he is upon
Him for food, and therefore for life,
and to learn to restrain earthly de
sires.
On this day also the soul’s most sol
emn anthem “Kol Nidre” is chanted
in the synagogue, and towards the
cloSp, of the day the trumpet, or ram’s
horn (Shofar) is sounded for the last
time during the Jewish New Year
Season; reminding the Jew of his sol
emn obligations toward a life of right
eousness.
The spirit of the day is best ex
pressed in the poem by Gustav Got
theil, entitled “Yom Kippur:”
“To Thee we give -ourselves today,
Forgetting of the world outside,
We tarry in Thy House, O-Lojrd,
From eventide to eventida
“From Thy all seeing, righteous
eye,
Our deepest heart can nothing hide.
It crleth up to Thee for peace,
From eventide to eventide.
“O may we lay to heart how swift,
The years of life do onward glide,
So learn to live that we may see,
Thy light at life’s eventide.”

Like all Jewish holidays. Yom Kip
pur begins with the evening of the pre

Advocating the use of private mail
receptacies, Postmaster Genefal
Hayes has issued a bulletin announc
ing that Oct. 19 will be a national mail
receptacle and house number census
day, in which the postmasters will re
quire the carriers to report every
dwelling and place of business on
their routes not so numbered and
equipped.
“If expeditious and efficient city de
livery is to he accorded.” says the
postmaster, it is essential that all
buildings, to which mail is delivered,
he properly numbered and equipped
with private mail receptacles. With
out house numbers, carriers are de
layed in serving the routes, and er
rors in delivery unavoidably occur; es
pecially when substitutes are on duty.
This condition coupled with the lack
cf mail receptacles inevitably impairs
efficiency and delays delivery, with a
resultant public inconvenience and
loss.
“To correct this evil it has been
decided to conduct a nation-wide cam
paign. with a view to having every
building properly numbered, and
equipped with a suitable receptacle
or opening in the door.
“As a-preliminary step, on Oct. 19.
1021, the postmaster of every post
office having city village delivery
will require his carriers to report the
addres& of every dwelling and place
op their routes, not so numbered and
equipped.
“The postmaster will then commun
icate with the owners or occupants
urging upon them the importance of
providing a proper number, or suita
ble receptacle, or both as the case
may be, if they desire the prompt and
safe delivery of their mail, and wish
to cooperate with their government.
In providing a more efficient and eco'
in the city will be closed for the day
tomorrow.
Services will be held by the Bruns
wick Hebrew congregation in the Hall
over the Brunswick Bank & Trust
Company, beginning with the evening
on Tuesday night at 7 o’clock, and on
Wednesday morning at 8:30, and con
tinuing through the day.

“House numbers enable carriers to
locate promptly buildings -to which
mail is addressed and avoid errdrs
and delays in delivery. TViail recep
tacles insure the prompt and safp de
livery of mail in the absence of occu
pants.
“All business and civic organiza
tions shouiH be urged to extend their
hearty co-operation by placing the
matter before their members carry
