NEGRO IS SAVED
BY TWO OFFICERS
Jimmy Wells, Caught Stealing
on Launch at Foot N Street,
Plunges Into Water and &
Pulled Out by Policeman.
For some time boat owners who tie
their craft to the docks at the foot
of IN’ street, have been complaining
about last night Officer
Slaughter and Durden succeeded in
landing the man who, it is thought, is
responsible for various articles which
htove been missing from time to time.
The officers caught a man on a
launch belonging to Lonnie Brown
and when an attempt was made to
grab him he plunged Into the water
nad started swimming, but had pro
ceeded only a short distance before
the officers realized that he was about
to go under for the time. Catch
ing a line, it was thrown to the drown
ing man and he was hauled out. The
negro said he was from Savannah apd
gave the name of Jimmy Wells.
When he first jumped he made his
way In the water to" a safe place un
der the wharf but two or three pistol
shots fired to frighten him, caused
him to again take to the water, and
It was then that he came near drown
ing.
Wells was taken to the police bar
racks and on his person was a large
pistol, a razor, two knives and other
articles, including two pocketbooks.
The officers had such a tussle with
the man that a change of uniform was
necessary as salt water mud and blue
'clothing don’t mix very well.
Wells will be held on two charges,
burglary and carrying concealed wea
pons.

LASSES WHITE MINSTRELS
PLEASED LARGE AUDIENCE
If the Lasses White Minst cels,
which came to the Grand last night,
is an indication of other attractions
booked for the season by Manager
Wood, the theatre-going public will
be delighted because the aggregation
of burnt cork artists certainly pleas
ed a large audience at the popular
playhouse from the moment ti e cur
tain went up until it rolled down for
the evening.
Lasses White is in himself a whole
show, but he had strong support from
every quarter as every man seemed
to be an artist in his particular line.
The music was excellent and the
singiug was way* out o? the ordinary
and the applause showed that the aud
ience appreciated real good vocal se
lections.
All in all, the Lasses White Min
strels. not only satisfied, but more
than pleased those present.
