DESIGNATED MAIL
RECEPTACLE DAY
Numbers on House Urged and
Also Suitable Place For De
% positing Mail.—All Business
and Civic Organizations Ask
ed to Help.
This is mail box day in every city
in the United States where the peo
ple are afforded the benefits of city
delivery, and 'the postoffice depart
ment urges that every house within
the city delivery limit be equipped
with a mail receptable of some kind.
Carriers of the local ploet office
will also make a report today as to
the number of houses in Brunswick
which are not numbered. The report
will be submitted to the postmaster,
who, in turn, will notify those houses
that, in order to receive mail, they
must be numbered.
The mail box request, however, is
not compulsory, but the department
is urging every patron, for the good
of the service, to erect some kind of
mail receptacle and it is hoped that
the people of Brunswick will comply
with the request. While this has
been designated as “mail box day,”
the campaign for mail boxes will be
continued for some time.
In designating this as “mail box
day” the department at Washington,
in Its order, says, among other things:
“If expeditious and efficient city de
livery is to be accorded, it is essential
that buildings, to which mall is deliv
ered be properly numbered and equip
ped with mail receptacles. With
out house numbers, carriers are de
layed in serving the routes, and er
rors in delivery unavoidably occur, es
pecially when substitutes are on duty.
This condition coupled with the lack
cf mail receptacles Inevitably impairs
efficiency and delays delivery, with a
resultant public inconvenience and
loss.
“To correct this evil It has been
decided to conduct a nation-wide cam
paign with a view to having every
building properly numbered, and
equipped with a suitable receptacle
or opening in the door.
“Asa preliminary step, on Oct. 19,
1021, the postmaster of every post
office having city or village delivery
will require his carriers to report the
address of every dwelling and place
on their routes, not so numbered and
equipped.
“The postmaster will then commun
icate with the owners or occupants
urging upon them the Importance of
providing a proper number, or suita
ble receptacle, or both as the case
