TO RESUME WORK
ON INNER HAHBOR
Col. Alstaetter, in Charge of
Harbor Work in This Dis
trict, Takes Steps to do
i Dredging at Earliest Possible
Date.
Information reaching the city yes
terday was to the effect that Col.
Alstaetter. engineer in charge of gov
ernment work in this district, will
soon ask bids for the dredging of
certain parts of the harbor of Bruns
wick. The big dredge Savannah,
•which has been operating here, is now
in ’Miami, where it will be engaged
for a period of two months. This
dredge could not perform the work
that the local conditions require for
the simple reason that what the gov
ernment' terms “marl" has formed in
great hills near what is known as
“Brandy Point" by citizens, but is
called the mouth of Turtle river, by
the government.,
The section is opposite the Quaran
tine station and extends quite a dis
tance, ending near the mouth of Joint
er creek. It was understood when
the Savannah left that anotehr dredge
would soon be sent to do this work
and it seems that the government is
to give this part of it out to private
contractors.

LIFE SENTENCE FOR
KILLING GRIMES
Will Durden Sentenced Yester
day Morning.—Claimed That
Physician Had Ruined His
H%rie, Met Him on the Street
and Shot Him.
Swainsbjcro, Gal, l>ct 20. —Found
guilty of murder with a recommenda
tion for mercy, in connection with the
fatal shooting of Dr. Charles Grimes
a it Norristown, Ga., a short time ago,
Will Durden was sentenced this morn
ing to life imprisonment. An appeal
for anew trial will probably be made.
The shooting took (place on the
streets of Norristown. Eight witness
es testified that no words passed be
tween Durden and Dr. Grimes when 1
they met, and that Durden slapped
the doctor and then shot him. Bur
den left the scene immediately and
was not apprehended for several
days.
Durden’s only defense was his
statement that the physician “ruined"
his home. It was brought out in the
trial that Dr. Grimes, who came to
Norristown a year ago from Platts
ville, Wis., was Durden’s physician
and had been attending Mrs. Durden
while she was ill.
The case was given to the jury at
9 o'clock last night. The verdict was
returned at 9:30 this morning. ~
