SIXTY-ONE YEARS OF SERVICE.
Old in years and rich in the es
teem of the people is but a .fair char
acterization o£ the Brunswick Rifle
men, Brunswick’s fine 1 old military
command which celebrated its sixty
first anniversary on Saturday evening
last. ,
Organized several years before the
tocsin sounded for the civil war in
this military 'organization has
been intact all of these years.and on
countless occasions; it has answered
the call to arms from state and nation,
and city. In those dark days of the
sixties, when mens souls were tried
as they had seldom been tried iir all of
the 4 bistory that had gone before, the
Brunswick Riflemen, composed of the
flower and the chivalry of Brunswick’s
young manhood, marched off to do
battle for the country’s cause. In the
bitter years of struggle that followed
the Riflemen played its part and the
pages of history record many acts of
heroism off its part, on several occa
sions its officers being breveted on
the field of battle for courageous con
duct in action. When the armies of
Lde surrendered at Appamatox, the
thin remnant of' the command return
ed to their native clime and in the
dark years of carpet bag rule that fol
lowed they stood an a bulwark cf pro
tection to this entire community.
During the ad interim from the civil
war to the brush with Spain, the
Riflemen under many commanders
kept their organization up to a high
standard, attended innumerable civil
affairs all over the country; won many
trophies for excellency in drilling and
found time to respond to calls made
by the state and the nation in several
emergencies. *
Finally, McKinley declared war
against Spain and again, the Riflemen
were among the first to respond and
while it saw no active service; for the
job' did not take long to finish, Bruns
wick’s crack military command was at
the ship’s side, ready to invade Cuba,
when Castile threw up the sponge.
Is there another military company
in the country with a more honorable
record in times of peace, as well as iff
times of war than this.cne here In
Brunswick?
Our best wishes and hearty congrat
ulations to Capt, HarwelL and his gal
lant officers and men. It’s iv small
honor to command such an organiza
tion; it is an equally imposing one
to belong to R. For here in all of
these years has been represented the
yery best there has been in the young
manhood of the community.
May the Brunswick Riflemen cel
ebrate many more anniversaries!
A VERY GREAT OPPORTUNITY.
The News very much hopes that
those sturdy Brunswlcklans, who are
charged with presenting Brunswick's
claims in connection with the port to
he designated by the State, realise
fully the importance ct the situation.
We also very much hope that the
people of the city, as a whole, are
sharing fully the realization of the
magnitude of this proposition along
with the committee. There is a vast
amount of work to Igi done and work
of u very high order that must be pre
sented to the State Port Commission
and lt Is going to require quite a large
fund to successfully meet this situa
tion!
What we want to impress upon the
people in connection with this situa
tion, is the magnificent opportunity lt
offers to Brunswick to cop out this
prize to which, by every rule of the
game, she la entitled. It Is our very
firm opinion that this newly created
Commission, which is to have the pow
er to designate the State port, is going
to look singly to the good of the state
in making its final conclusions In the
matter. It is going to weigh In the
balances, the advantages offered by
all vf the ports of the state, amt It
Is going to award the victory of the
port that can best be made to do the
service desired.
We people in Brunswick know the
va’ue of Brunswick as a port; it is
known to every expert who ever came
here to make an Investigation as to its
i real merits. But the thing we must do
now. If we would win* this grout prize,
is to so present thy facta and figures
to the Stat> l*ort Commission, so that
they too will m*ognUe the faet that
Brunswick is not only the best port iu
Georgia, but as a matter of fact, is the
only natural one within the confines
of the state!
The fact that the United States gov
ernment. In the world war. after a a
investigation id mrt\only the Georgia

lan tic coast, for the local 100 of one
of its greatest explosive plants, se

'“THRIFT—' THE CORNERSTONE OF
PROSPERITY.” 'V, i
The treasury department sends out
a “poster” advertising government se
curities, .such as thrift stamps, treas
ury savings stains, war savings
stamps, and treasury savings certifi
cates, in which, of course, the people
are urged to invest in these securities.
The central idea conveyed is that
thrift is tlie cornerstone of prosperity,
and here is a declaration that is wor
thy of consideration: “Save before
you spend; that is the way to suc
ceed,’’ says the Columbus Enquirer-
Sun*
This is so true that if should en
gage the attention of all of us who
wish to succeed. Of course, if a fel
low doesn’t wish to succeed he need
not pay any attention to it, and prob
ably will not*
But meet people wish to succeed.
They wish to make, something ,of
themselves and for themselves. But
they will never be able to do it unless
they adopt the plan of saving before
they spend. You certainly can’t eat
your cake and have it, too.
And this word save has something
Of a double meaning. It means the
living within one’s income as well as
the laying up something for a rainy
day* It is*certatn that if one does not
live within his incchne he cannot lay
up, anything.
So that saving begins in the prac
tice of economy ami thrift; in the
making of the ends of today meet
without stretching out and gathering
fh ends of tomorrow; iri the living,
at least, upon what you make today,
even if not upon less than you make.
Y u can’t save anything in ,any other
wdy. And what is mere, you will run
yourself into debt if you do not pursue
this course.
Very often it requires the practicing
of the most rigid economy in order to
live within one’s income. It may mean
a great deal of self-denial; it may
mean, sometimes, real sacrifice; but
the end to be gained by it is worth
while; tor one Is not Insured against
a time when the body and the brain,
perhaps, will be unable to function in
inch manner as to enable him to earn
h!s jiving, and if that day should come
it will be a most comforting thing to
knew that there is something laid
away that will stand between ycu and
want; something that will prevent you
from becoming ft burden upon others.
These government securities offer
•plcndld opportunities for serving;
tn .-y will yield the return' promised
in the way of interest until the date of
maturity, when they will he redeemed
at their fare vr'.ue.
There are other ways, however, of
Investing, ef saving, aside from the
purchase of government securities.
The savings banks of the country of
fer Inducements that are, probably, a
shade better In the matter of inter
est; and there are still other forms
of Investment that pay more than the
savings banks.
But the main thing 1 to save; to lay
by something; no matter whether you
elect to invest In government securi
ties, deposit in banks or x whatever
ihe form of investment may be.
Resolve today that you will turn ov
er anew leaf and begin to save some
thing; you will not forget It, hut you
may regret not’doing so.

that the splendid city of Chattanooga
