“THE SIGN ON THE DOOR”
iAiT THE GRAND AGAIN TODAY
In “The Sign on the Dcor,” Norma
Talmadge, incomparable emotionaf ac
tress of the silent drama, is seen at
her best in the most interesting and
absorbing screen vehicle yet given
to this talented star. •‘ • 1 ? 1
• “The Sign on the Door” qpened to
a capacity house at the Grand Theatre
last night. It is a screen version of
Channing Pollock’s highly successful
stage play of the same name, and to
merely say that it is a creditable one
would be putting the facts very mildly
indeed.
A splendid plot is extremely well
presented on the screen. The story
concern Si Ann Bun ni tv ell, a pretty
stenographer, who, through no fault
of her own, is compromised by her
employer’s scapegrace son. Later,
when she marries a man of high char
acter and social standing, the fellow
coi es into her life again. He is kill
ed in a struggle with her husband.
Th:; husband does not know that his
wL') has witnessed fcbe tragedy. An
ex denouement follows her
ac ip summoning the police and ac
cu ng herself of the shooting.
r . lie star has excellent support.
Cl rles Rlehman is seen as her lead
in: man, and others prominent in the
6a are Lew Cody, David Proctor,
H >n Weir and Paul McAllister.
“ The Sign on the Door” was adapt
ed or the screen by Mary Murillo and
H bert Brenon..* It is a First (Nation
al ’traction.
’ he picture will be Bhown again at
T 1 Grand today.
“PASSING THRU" IS A FIN'E
DOUGLAS M’LF.AN COMEDY
“Passing Thru,” the latest Thomas
H. Ince-Paramount comedy starring
Douglas Mac Lean, which comes to the
Bijou Theatre today, ;(s the humorous
talo of a young man whose willingness
to assume the troubles of others in
volves him in serious difficulties,
Billy Barton, the leading character
portrayed toy Mr. Mac Lean, first
draws a sentence to the penitentiary
through having assumed the blame for
a hank theft of which he was entirely
lnlnocent. Before ho is placed behind
the bars, however, he makes his es
cape in a spectacular train wreck and
seeks refuge In the village of Culver
ton. Here, befriending a lazy mule
being beaten by her master gets him
into more difficulties, nd his misfor
tunes continue to pile up until the fi
nal scenes of the story when a deluge
of good luck more, than evens the
score.
Madge Bellamy, recently recruited
to the screen by Thomas H. Ince from
The tNew York stage, Is seen as Mary
Splvlns, the charming object of the
young man’s affections. Otto Hoff
man, Margaret Livingston, Edith
Yorke, Louis Natheaux. Fred Gam
bold, Willis Robards, and others com
plete the cast.
“Passing Thru" was directed 'by
William A. Setter, under the personal
supervision of Thomas H. luce. Bert
Cann photographed the production.
