KILLS NEGRO HOBO
Caught Riding on Train From
Florida and When Called Off
the Car Takes Revolver From
Agent Who Again Gets Pos
session of It arid Shoots Him.
y
Coroner Baldwin went to Thallman
late Saturday night’ called there to
hold an inquest over the body of Sam
Henderson, colored. Who was shot and
killed toy A. A. Stokes, white, a spe
cial agent of the Sfeaboard Air Line.
It seems that the negro was seen
stealing a ride on one of the trains
and was made to come off the car.
When he reached the ground, reports
say, he had an altercation with the
special agent and succeeded in taking
his revolver from him. After a scuf
fle, lasting several minutes, the spe
cial agent regained possession of the
weapon and shot Henderson. Those
who accompanied the coroner as ju
rors were: J. R. Price, who was fore
man; F. R. Harrison, J. B. Davis, Jr.,
A. L. Owens, Jr., J. J. Farrell, J. B.
Simpson. After investigation and ex
amining only one witness, the jury
returned a verdict absolving Stokes
from any blame
Sheriff Pyles spent yesterday morn
ing at Thallman, jvhere he went to
investigate the killing but several who
he desired to question were not there,
included in the number was Stokes,
the man who did [the killing. The
sheriff intends to make further inves
tigation.
After the visit pf Sheriff Pyles to
Thallman it develcrped that there was
no eye-witness to the killing and only
Stokes and the dead man were there
when the shooting took place.

scene merriment. Constraint
was thrown to the winds and every
body went in for a good time. They
got it all right enough.
It was a night when the dtern hand
of the law wqs not to be thought of
and the police officers might as well
have joined in as they could only
watch the fun. A well known young
matron, fond of her cook, induced her
to join the crowd. She did and it is
needless to say, at the end of the .hi
larity, unmasking was in order but
this particular “celebrator” had little
to do in that line —she masqueraded
as an old time negress—she was neg
ress alright, but the present genera
tion kind. But she enjoyed the night
Immensely and really went with the
white folks, one time anyway.
If the gate is not where it belongs
this morning—just get out and hunt
It. That’s all you can do as spooks
are not subject to earthly punishment
in the first place and in the second
you’ll never find out who removed it.
It’s hard—but take it in a good na
tured way.
And—since so much is said about
the “spooks,” it wcmJd be a shame to
leave the nurses and doctors and their
friends out as they too, put aside their
dignity and profession and joined in
the fun. There were many in at ten
dance at this frolic. It appeared that
It was a “spooky” party rather than
a “smoky” party.
