BOARO WILL KEEP
A DEMONSTRATOR
Delegation Appeared Before
Commissioners Yesterday
Morning and Urged That This
Important Place be Coninued
With Mrs. Merritt in Charge.
At the meeting of the board erf coun
ty commissioners yesterday morning,
a delegation appeared before that
body asking that the county demon
stration department be continued and
with Mrs. Madge B. Merritt in charge.
After hearing various persons who
gave valuable information along poul
try, truck, etc.,•dines, the board decid
ed to continue this department and
Mrs. Merritt will have charge of it
as usual.
It had been rumored that It was the
intention to abolish this department
and for the purpose of
showing the board what a valuable
service was coming from it and the
good results obtained, the delegation
weht before the commissioners. Facts
and figures were presented which con- 1
vinced members that what it cost the
county to maintain this department
was money well spent.
One of the ladies said yesterday:
“The demonstrator is the agent for
the producer and for the consumer.
The farmer with a ton of hay and a
carload of corn finds a market at
home for these products through her
efforts; the farmer’s wife with a sur
plus of eggs and poultry finds a mar
ket with the city housewife.
‘VThe farm and home demonstration
agents help the city folks as. much as
much as they do the country people.
If there Is a scarcity of any commodi
ty—say vegetables—the person pro
ducing that particular thing can ask
whatever price he pleases, but when
the farmers, through these agents,
raise more vegetables the price bo the
consumer, city folks, would be less.
“Up until the last year Or so the
Irish potatoes consumed in our city
were shipped here from northern mar
kets and there is no better place to
grow them than right here. The peo
ple are being educated along this line
by our demonstration agents. This
year three carloads of seed Irish pota
toes were planted in Glynn county and
soon we expected to see the local sup
ply equal to the demand and, even
tually, ship to other, markets. When
grown here they ard cheaper and the
money paid for them stays here."
