HOUSE
MEMORIES
When night gathers her shadowy veils
Apd drapes them the trees,
Memory a floodgate of dreams,
Abd through its-dim way sees
Your dear form, in- the vacant chair.
The night wind heard the music or
your voice,
As you sang to me in the summer dusk
And on its gentle starward flight,
Bore a sweet burden Into the night.
Many winters and summers, too,
Have passed, since you sang the old
songs,
I seem to hear their footsteps
Creep through the snow, -
And dance through green vales
Of Junes long ago.
And over their well-worn paths
I hear your feeble step and slow,
As you pause by your easy chair,
And your eyes are filled with Heav
en’s glow.
As you sit holding hands
With memories there,
,And when I see you white and still,
Your selvery hair shading
Your placid brow, the cry of ray heart
Is, that you did n t know
That through youth’s careless ways,
Ana maturity’s engrossing days.
Mother. I loved you so!
—Alide Neely.
