Georgia Song Bird Makes Tre
mendous Hit at Her Initial
Appearance in This City Last
Night.
9
Miss Gladys Wheless, beautiful and
gifted Southern singer captivated a
large audience at The Grand last
night, in a program of musical charm.
The Woman’s Club sponsored her
premiere performance and provided
an evening of rare musical delight to
those wlio heard it.
The young artist was dressed In a
Paris gown of blue panne velvet rich
ly inwrought with rhinestones and
pearls. - \
The opening number of the pro
gram was “Vezzozette e care,” by An
drea Falconiere, and this was follow
ed by other songs, the group conclud
ing with “Lindy,” a Southern song en
thusiastically received, as an encore.
The three songs of Edwaird Grieg’s,
“The Princess,” “In a Boat” and
“Thanks Fcp* Thy Hand,” were well
given.
The climax of the program came
with the singing of “There is No
Death” and a “Song of the Open,”
which gave Miss Wheless more scope
for showing her colorful voice with
a dramatic turn.
Miss Wheless’ voice is of exquisite
sweetness and jts flexibility lends
itself to many variations of tone and
expression. A charming air of co
quetry was expressed in the little
French song, “Bonjour Suzon,” by Deo
Delibes.
Altogether, the program was one of
delightful arrangement and was pleas
ing enough to Impress the audience
with the knowledge that Georgia has
added another artist to the musical
world of which the State and the
South is proud. She has had careful
training in New York and Paris. /
Miss Wheless was accompanied at
the piano by Robert Barrett, whose
work" deserves especial compliment.
He is a finished artist and that his
art was appreciated was splendidly
evidenced by the liberal applause that
greeted him.
The Woman’s Club in bringing Sa
vannah’s gifted song bird to Bruns
wick rendered an appreciated service
to the music lovers of the city, all of
whom hope that Miss Whelesg will
play a return engagement in this city
in the near future.
