ST. SIMON ROAD IS
APPROVED BV PRESS
Many State Weekly Newspapers
Express Opinion Greatest De
velopment in Recent Years in
All of Georgia.
Many of the weekly papers of the
state are commenting on the recent
bond election held in Glynn county.
Among the number The News is re
producing one from the Alma Times,
which will be read with interest:
Business men and newspaper edi
tors througout the state arc congrat
ulating Glynn county and the city of
Brunswick upon the splendid major
ity by which they have approved the
proposal to tie the of Geor
gia to St. Simon island by means of
highway.
The project contemplates the con
struction of a causeway across the
famous “Marshes of Glynn,” immor
talized by Sidney Lanier, which, with
the bridges to be built, will connect
St. Simon with the mainland.
The cost of the project is estimated
at $350,000, which is to be provided
jointly by Glynn county and Bruns
wick by the bonding method. The
county has voted overwhelmingly in
favor of a county bond issue of $175.-
000, to defray the part of expense ap
portioned to the county, and it is un
derstood that work will be started
in the near future. The city bond elec
tion cannot be held until it is author
ized by the legislature next summer!
Brunswick men regard the project
as one of the most Important high
way in the south. It
is shown that it will be of inestima
ble value to Brunswick situated upon
one of the best harbors on the South
Atlantic seaboard, and enjoying un
usual railroad facilities; also to Glynn
and surrounding counties, and in the
way of developing the agricultural
and scenic resources of St. Simon,
it will be revolutionary in Its ef
fect.
It is pointed out that there is no
spot in America that is richer In 10-
mance and historic interest than St.
Simon island. Upon it is the seat of
the flrsi capital qf Georgia, Frederica,
established by General Oglethorpe;
and the site of the historic battle of
Bloody Marsh, which marked the be
ginning of Spanish decadence on the
Western Hemisphere and determined
the issue as to whether this section
was subject to Spanish or Anglo-Sax
on rule.
