,A GROWING INDUSTRY
•. ii
Unquestionably tire sugar cane in
dustry is one of the largest money
makers in th e state of Georgia and
Florida. Even the fact that the price
of sHgar has dropped lately, for it was
natural that it should drop, has not re
tarded the development of the sugar
cane industry.
The Florida Times-Union of yester
day discussing this vitally interesting
theme said:
The development of th© sugar
cmne industry in Florida has not
subsided with the drop in price of
sugar. As we have stoted before
the retail price of sugar was 0
cents a pound when we started ad
vocating the syrup and sugar in
dustry in Florida two and a half
years ago and it is above that
price now and #lll likely remain
above that figure for some time.
Sugar cane has been found to be
an easily grown crop and a com
paratively sure crop, and the hun
dreds of people who have planted
it for the first time in the paft two
years are convinced that it i3 one
of the products they can depend
on for certain money and many
will add it to their varied crops
in the years to come.
The pant year saw the sugar
cano crop vastly increased in Flor
ida, and there I still strong indi
cation that the present year will
see the yield increased from 50 to
100 per cent. Of course it is going
to be necessary to change oar
tactics somewhat in order to han
dl e this amount of can© and the
products from It. Wo will need a
number of standardised svrup
mills of u.capaeity capable of han
dling from 200 to 506 acres of
cano in each community.
We will also require sortir eug:.r
mills In the Southern part of Ihe
stute to take care of thj 'mir.fctiso
'acreage of cane that L now being
grown and planted in lower Hist

THE JAPANESE AMBASSADOR
EXPLAINS
Baron Hayeshi, the new ambassa
dor from Japan to England, who has
Just left his native land, and who >s
I in a position to speak with authority,
declares that his nation has no inten
tion of engaging in a naval war With
America, and that increases are being
made to the Japanese navy for the
purpose of combating the spread cl
bolshevism.
“My country,” soys the baron, “is
the sentinal of other countries, and
we have a well-organized government
which will light bolshevism.”
Efforts have beer, made, acording to
reports, by . the Russian soviet gov
srnmeffl to bring about uprisings in
)utlyin4 Japanese provinces and hold
ings on the mainland. It is reported
that money and agents have been sent
there for that purpose.
Discussing the matter of buildiilg
lavies the Japanese ambassador says
hat business men whose cash pays
for navies and, their upkeep, should
neet and rgquetef their government
o limi-t the mze of the navies. In
:onection with the statement of the
taron it i3 interesting to note that
Japan is now carrying out a naval
program that whs planned (several
/ears ago, and when her present plans
iro completed her navy will be ohe
ialf the size of the navy of the United
States,
, While, for the rnest part, people
have not given much thought to th©
ideas that. Japan is preparing for a
war with the United States, it is true
hot in sone quarters more or less
concern ha# been felt, and is still Ml
il this regard. Japan’s naval pro
gram, inaugurated several years ago.
.carried to completion, would have giv
jm that country a navy of about equAl,
f not superior, strength to- that of rh
Tnitcd Stales, if the United States
has not inaugurated a naval program
sine*, then that hag carried her natal
'rep rations tar airhead of thus© bt
he Japanese of that day.
But. getting hack to the discussion
•f a conflict between Japan and th©
Jni‘?d States, tho question arises:
Would Baron Hayechi admit that Jfl
an is preporing for a war with the
United States. ? Would he not
hat such was’ the, case, if, indeed, It
were? The Japanese people are not
io silly, certainly one who Is lift Pitied
with th© great responsibility of an
ambassadorship would not be, as to
.pill the beans by giving it out that
Japan is getting ready for vittr with
the United States.
No on© would expect him to admit
It, even if it were tr;..
