terest in Dr. Erhenreich’s photo
graphs and credentials from the
States, among' whic|i was an auto
graphed picture of President Harding,
also a letter from the Chief Executive
together with letters of commenda
tion from a number of America’s ce
lebrities.
The, moving picture “Treasure Isl
and” was made on the estate of Dr.
Dol’ley, and the party visited the
ocean caves, the sea gardens, the beau
tiful palm-fringed beaches, etc., at
which the scenes were made. Dr.
Simmons state! that recent news stor
ies appearing throughout the States
coming from the pen bf a well-known
American writer greatly mis*epre
sents the true state cf affairs on the
island, as he found Nassau a most in
viting and picturesque spot, romantic
in its traditions and history of the con
quest of the buccaneers. The native
negro police are immaculately uni
formed, and bear themselves with the
dignity of admirals, while th e streets
are kept spotless and the quaint little
shops have quite an.appeal in their
distinctly foreign appearance to Amer
ican eyes which have become accus
tomed to glass fronts and bizarre dis
plays.'
A of population of
the islands, which is about 20,000, are i
negroes, most of them of very fine in- \
teiligence, and among them being l
barristers, members of the House of
Assembly, on© newspaper editor, and
a number of shopkeepers. The negro
population of Nassau almost entirely
live in their own portibn of the city,
called Grants Town, maintaining
shops of their own; while quite a num
her are engaged in farming. Among
quite a number in the interior and on
the outlying islands superstition still
reigns and thatched-walled Pnd
thatched-rcofed huts are their dwell*
ing places.
The native police are well drilled
and well organized under the direction
of a skilled commandant, an official
of the British army, while their band .
of some twenty or more pieces, com- j
posed of skilled musicians under the
direction of an efficient white band- j
niaster, are engaged in daily practices
at their barracks preparing for the
winter season. They have Just begun j
their daily afternoon and evening con-;
certs in the beautiful park on the har- 1
bor front fncing the government build
ings. *
Many interesting features of the
trip through and around the beautiful
Island of Now Providence were de
tailed. and Dr. Simmons brought back j
nmoerouH photographs which he J
made .of interesting parson t and plac- j
while on his delightful visit.

ENTERED WRONG
HOUSE. IS KILLED
J. M. Dryden, White, Shoots
Seaman Green When Latter
Attempted to Force
His House.
A mistake which proved fatal to
Seaman Green, colored, occurred yes
terday morning shortly after 5 o’clock
when he forcibly entered the home of
J. M. Dryden, 1005 I street. The man
•knocked three times but was refused
admittance and he forcibly got into
.the house and in the %m occupied
by Mr. Dryden. Of course taking the
man for one with no good intention,
,Mr. Dryden shot him, the ball from a;
.32 calibre pistol striking th e intrud- j
/er over the right eye, but, notwith
standing the fact that the wo urn and i
would have ordinarily caused instant
death, In this case the man lingered
from 5 a. m. until 2 p. m., at which
{time he died at th© city hospital
where he had been taken when shot, j
The entire affair seems to have been
that th© negro, who was evidently un
|der the influence of liquor, ma<le a
mistake and thought he was at his
own home, w r hieh is located at 1926
J street, near, the house that flirt
thought ■ his own. The two houses
are very much alike and the location
is almost similar.
'Coroner Baldwin summoned the fol
lowing jury and made a thorough in
vestigation: A. R. Berrie. T.
Hawkins. Mrs. J. E. Teeks. C. TANARUS; Mor
ris, R. T. Hitch. T. E. Anderson. S. J.
Gordon. It was not until 7 o’clock
last night that the jury finished its
investigation and rendered a verdict
saying th© killing was justifiable.
There was evidence before the jury
showing that Seaman had been drink
ing and the members who examined
witnesses, etc., are of the opinion
that Green did not enter the home of
Mr. Dryden with evil intent hut by ac
cident. The dead man has lived In
■Brunswick ftr several years and was
a fisherman and longshoreman. He
leaves a wife. Mr. Dryden has lived
here about a year and is a carpenter.
Coroner Baldwin had detained him
until after the investigation when lrn
was rrjeased.
This is the first case in the history
of Gljuin county, if not the entire
state, that females have served on a
coroner’s fury.
Abolition Subs Suggested.
